Sumin happens to be an extremely gifted exorcist, possessing the strongest sight at, Class V, which can see through to the far shore clear as day. As a child he loved yokai, often going into the forst with his mother and baby brother to play with the small feral spirits. But once he was enrolled into school this changed, Sumin was quick to learn that others could not see the beings he deemed his friends. Once ousted by his fellow students he began to put the blame onto the yokai for his human relations failing. Begrudgingly one day he went along with his brother and mother to play with the little ones again, unexpectedly a powerful youkai had gone rogue that day and tried to attack the two brothers. Sumin's mother shielded them from the attack, and not even a moment later a being that could only be described as godly descended upon them. Instead of saving Sumin's mother the god only lead the two boys to safety, leaving her to die. Sumin would go on to remember and resent this god, the God of Curation.
The young exorcist departed to Korea to train amongst other exorcists there and meet his biological father. After years with no schooling he returns to Japan, with a burning grudge. Quite literally getting off the plane to see that god he blamed for all of his trauma having fun and parading around pretending to be a mortal with a human boy, Kobe. Sumin does the only sensible thing and breaks into this god's shrine on the day of his festival, not only this but just... showing up to Tansho's college to fuck with him during lectures all while offing and collecting yokai souls to obtain the right to challenge a god on equal footing. Despite resenting Tansho, Sumin learns of his quirks and personality and actually enjoys their false friendship. So much so he could imagine they would be good friends if not for his mother's passing.
