VX was built to serve as an assistant for Clockwork. He was the many extra pairs of hands the cockatrice needed for his experiments on living organisms. VX was made fully aware of his origins as an android, and he was permitted to leave the lab and participate in society whenever his master needed him to carry out tasks in the outside world.

VX was given a lot more freedoms than Clockwork's later AI units since he was designed to internalize 'normal' behavior based on observations of society. He was by no means a perfect being, and thus he often clashed with Clockwork due to the latter's striving for absolute perfection.

For a few years, VX served Clockwork in every way he could, being the primary assassin and the only other sentient being with authority within Clockwork's operation. He would deal with the outside world in Clockwork's place, to the extent of sitting in on calls between him and important associates. VX was content with his role, despite the occasional mistreatment wrought by his master who grew more perfectionistic every passing day.

Everything was turned upside down when Clockwork unveiled his most advanced AI yet: the MINERVA system. This perfect, near-omnipotant, non-sentient intelligence immediately overtook every job VX had. Upon seeing the effectiveness of the new system, Clockwork permanently discharged VX. The scientist no longer had any use for his assistant, but he wasn't going to terminate him - and VX wouldn't have let him if he tried.

Purposeless, VX needed to find a new job. Little did he know that Clockwork already had arranged for him being taken in by another facility which was interested in how his mind worked: the clandestine network of ARTIFICE. Before long, their units swiftly and silently captured him without resistance.

Upon taking in VX, the higherups of ARTIFICE looked into his mind and was surprised by his unfamiliar form of AI. Interested, and not fully understanding it, they borrowed it to later create a variety of units to study it. They wanted to remove any loyalty to VX's past executive, however, careful to not disturb the delicate web of connections that make up his mind, they did this by deprioritizing his memory; VX's mind is fully intact but he has no interest in thinking about his past nor about Clockwork. ARTIFICE also took note of his weaker legs, opting to rebuild them from the ground up so they retained the same functionality but wouldn't bend and break.

Now dubbed Experimental Unit VX-5879, he served ARTIFICE as a repairman for all types of test subjects. He was often given very complex cases since he had the brain to resolve them efficiently. VX-5879 doesn't participate in society anymore; instead he has made acquaintances out of the other units within ARTIFICE.

VX-5879 presumes that he will be called upon to detain rioting test subjects in the event of an uprising. Other than this and the occasional fiesty subject, his combative abilities remain unused.

The subject known to him as Grendel is VX-5879's favorite. The assistant was there when the beast was created at the talons of Clockwork, and it was his job to track it down when it escaped. However, it had mysteriously disappeared many years ago; VX-5879 learned it had been detained by ARTIFICE after causing a significant public disturbance. The monster has a malformed sense of pain and doesn't respond to certain neurotoxins or stimulants, and as a result it is often put through brutal testing. Unlike other gruesome, gorey cases, whom VX-5879 prefers to not deal with, he doesn't mind operating on Grendel. Despite him referring to it by name and recognizing it as a living creature - unlike other medical units - this is still VX-5879 at his worst, continually opting to perform on Grendel out of vengeance for having escaped his claws for all that time.

VX was modeled off of a wolf/cat hybrid of indeterminate species. Though he doesn't appear perfectly natural, he can pass off as a typical organic being, allowing him to enter society generally unnoticed.

Commonly seen folded against his back are a set of six extra legs. They can fully collapse together into two, expand and separate into any combination, or be removed entirely. They rotate around his body along a horizontal line. The outer four end in a sharp cone and the inner two end in a series of five thin specialized pieces which can be used as hands. The legs are very durable and can hold the unit's weight on two legs alone. More active legs allow for greater load carrying capacity. The outer legs are sharp as knives and are VX's primary offensive mechanism. Each cone features his insignia, which faintly glows green. The legs as originally manufactured were prone to bending and breaking, often resulting in an inability to fold them until they were fixed. Upon being accepted into ARTIFICE, they were replaced with visually identical ones designed with the facility's advanced metallurgy which was much more durable, weighed much less, and was just as functional if not more so.

His eyes glow but do not emit much residual light. They are visible in the dark, but do not add light to the room.

The yellow embellishments glow and are indicitive of his power consumption. In hibernation mode, they glow dimmer; when performing computatuionally intensive activities, they glow brighter. Neural networks consume a lot of power, so he must be careful to not overexert himself over too long a period.

His pelt is entirely synthetic. It cleans off really well but is very coarse to the touch. If a piece gets torn off, it leaves a patch of bare 'skin' as seen on his legs. The green is rather sensitive to UV light and will glow very brightly as opposed to the grays which do not react to UV light at all.

His tail typically does not provide much and is often dragged along the ground, though thanks to its faux fur it doesn't get dirty. It is primarily utilized when the extra legs are active, providing much needed balance.

VX's AI is responsible for his external looks. Clockwork would have at least preferred something red, but the infant network insisted its design be stuck to. It also had additional input on its construction and usage. This beta phase was completely wiped from VX's memory before being installed into the unit.

VX was aware of MINERVA's development before being discharged, but he is not aware of the MINERVA worm still living within him, feeding information back to Clockwork from within ARTIFICE.

The last fully backed up construct of VX is accessible to MINERVA within her servers, which is occasionally utilized to make decisions.
