Overview

Barley, formerly known under the codename of "Barleywine", was an agent of the elusive 'Black Organization', having been brought into the crime syndicate as a small child due to his older sibling (codename █████████). Barley studied biology within the syndicate, eventually working alongside an agent (codename Sherry) in order to recreate the drug Apotoxin 4869 (APTX-4869), a drug developed in order to kill without leaving a trace within the victim. He also worked alongside fellow agent Vermouth within the field, with said agent acting as his mentor. His time at the organization came to a close as he was betrayed by fellow agent (codename Gin) while on a field mission, with Gin attempting to murder him.

  • Soon after he departure from the syndicate, he discovered that agent Sherry was alive and well, as well as the previously-unknown shrinking side effect of the APTX-4869. He vowed to work alongside Sherry, now under the alias of Ai Haibara, in order to destroy the crime syndicate in which they both had come from, as well as find an antidote for the drug they had recreated together.
  • Barley now lives with Haibara and a Prof. Hiroshi Agasa, who has agreed to take both Haibara, who is a victim of the APTX's shrinking side effect, and Barley into his home.
  • Very few people know of his previous involvement in the 'Black Organization'. Most only know him as a live-in exchange student from the U.S. and family friend of Professor Agasa's.

Despite his reclusive and timid demeanor, he can be rather lively if around the right individuals. He's also very skilled in hand-to-hand combat and is a decent marksman due to his prior field training. He is also excellent at the art of disguise, much like his former mentor Vermouth.

Notes
  • Two visible scars along his face, as well as two notches in his left ear. Both of these were received during a mission with Vermouth from an enemy agent.
  • One jagged scar on his shoulder from where Gin shot him while attempting to kill him.
  • (Post-Org. Takedown, Barley also receives two more jagged scars, as well as top-surgery scars. See his refs. in recent images.)
  • Barley gets along well-enough with his peers, though it takes a while for him to let his guard down enough to allow himself to interact with them. He also stuggles to gain the trust of those who know of his past, such as Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa and Heiji Hattori.

Barley often finds himself fidgeting with his hands, and usually carries something in his pocket to stimulate his restless hands, such as a coin or small fidget toy.

Relationships
Ai Haibara / Shiho Miyano former co-agent
The closest thing to a friend that Barley ever made while in the Organization. He sees her now as a close friend and shares a familial bond with her, though the two of them aren't very good at expressing that towards eachother. Barley hopes she will choose what is best for herself, even if that means remaining as Ai once they find an antidote.
Professor Hiroshi Agasa adoptive guardian
An unexpected but very much welcome addition to Barley's life. Agasa took both Haibara and Barley under his wing and into his home, knowing of the dangers that would befall him in doing so. Barley would give his life for any of his allies, but especially for Agasa. He feels like he owes that to the professor for giving him another chance at life.
Vermouth previous mentor
Vermouth trained Barleywine as soon as he was old enough to begin field training (around age 15). She taught him the art of disguise and how to become a deadly agent for the Organization. Despite the circumstances, Barleywine truly did see her as a mentor and guide. He wanted to make her proud. Vermouth regretted not being there to protect him upon finding out Gin had supposedly killed him.
