Figment
A recurring nightmare, of loneliness and fear as one is pursued through twisting, perpetually dark halls, a home transformed into a deadly maze. Desperately seeking safety outside those walls - because to be caught only inspires thoughts of death. You beg for help, but there is no one who cares to hear. There is no certainty of safety even if one were to escape...unless you make sure of it with your own two hands. The nightmare is rooted in a feeling of loneliness and desolation, the anguish of being abandoned in one's most vulnerable moment, in a place where they should have been safe.
About
Once a formless figment, Somnia gained power and form after his nightmare of origin afflicted his original dreamer multiple times over the course of several years. Quiet and aloof, he has spent much of his existence secluded away in his kingdom, never venturing outside of it. He sees crafting nightmares as something of a duty for Stygian, and upholds his own with a strange seriousness. As a result of his dedicated seclusion, he finds talking a bit difficult (both the act and the pressure of holding a conversation), and societal norms are mostly unknown to him. But after a number of decades being completely in control of his nightmares, something strange happened during one one night. It left the normally steadfast Stygian a little shaken; however, in turn, it also encouraged him to start venturing outside of his own kingdom...
Personality
Somnia is a quiet, though curious soul. Only recently in his existence, having finally ventured from his kingdom, has he been able to indulge this part of himself. He spends his days observing the world around him, processing and learning as he goes and rarely ever voicing his realizations. Some misunderstand his silence and believe him to be mute, but the truth of it is that Somnia finds it difficult to speak - perhaps because for years upon years, he never spoke. He can string his thoughts along well enough, but voicing them is an entirely different story. But he's eager to learn and practicing all the time.
His often expressionless face hides a Stygian that feels very deeply, even if he never seems to show it. He bonds firmly and fiercely with those who accept his attempts at friendship, and will readily defend them with all he has. He is patient and, being as he is, quite a good listener. His answers may be a little lacking in depth, but they are always honest and well-meaning.
Perhaps because of the nature of his nightmare, he is prone to moments where he seems to tire of company and withdraws away from all. He can be seen drifting alone through the field, surrounded by a lonely, melancholic air, and will vanish when others draw too close. It's nothing personal, and those close to him understand this need and allow him his space. Eventually, Somnia will return, just as quietly as he left.
Kingdom: The Endless Field
Somnia's kingdom consists of a sprawling, endless red field, where it is perpetually night. The sky is dark and empty, save for eerie red clouds and a few stars that only ever seem to be fixated in the sky directly above oneself. In the center of the field is a two-story house whose lights are never on, where all his nightmares take place. The field is a part of the nightmare, too, but dreamers rarely ever last long enough to reach it before they wake up. If you were to reach the field, you will quickly discover there is no escape - no matter which way you go or how far, you will always find yourself back at the house. Somnia is the only one able to navigate, or grant the ability to do so, through the kingdom with ease. A small plot of land for gardening and a grove of trees are the only other noteworthy landmarks. There is little else in his kingdom - its emptiness serving to magnify the oppressive feeling of loneliness that permeates the nightmare.
The house's inner layout is a complex maze of twisting, repeating hallways and stairs. There aren't many doors, and those that appear usually cannot be opened. Though the lights are never on, there is a strange, faint blue glow that emanates from the inner corners of the building, in contrast to the red of the outside, that allows dreamers to see their surroundings somewhat and navigate. It is nearly impossible to reach the bottom floor on one's own, but getting there does allow access to the field. The appearance of the house and its interior is based off that of the dreamer who first had the nightmare from which Somnia was created, though obviously quite twisted beyond its original scope.
Though he's able to summon up shadowy figures to act as the pursuer in the nightmare, Somnia often takes on the role himself - not because he finds it enjoyable or thrilling, but simply because he feels he must take the responsibility head on (another quirk as a result of his belief of crafting nightmares). For this purpose he normally takes his Carnivorous form, though to all dreamers he looks like a shadowed, humanoid figure. This figure will chase without relent, and even if one is able to escape into the field, the chase does not end there.
It does not end until you are caught.
HC Traits
- Lonely Thoughts: With his newfound abilities as a Legendary, Somnia is able to communicate telepathically with those within his kingdom to allow for easier communication. That being said, he still tries to practice speaking aloud as often as he can. When communicating this way, his 'voice' takes on a strange quality, and those who hear it may have the vague sense and doubt that they aren't actually speaking to anyone else at all, just themselves. Only Somnia's prescence and reactions, waiting for a response, banish that doubt.
- Flower and Root: For those who have gained Somnia's approval, or have their kingdom housed within his, he gifts with a red flower similar to the ones growing from his Parasitic form. This flower allows the holder to notice strange, vine-like roots that span the field below the grass in odd directions - were those always there? Never you mind - so long as you have a destination within the kingdom in mind and pick a single root, any root, to follow you will reach that place in no time.
Trivia
- 'Somnia' means 'sleep' in Latin.
- His nightmare concept is based on a real nightmare I had every so often as I grew up - though the field is a new addition, as those nightmares all stayed within the house.

Connections
Saudade
Somnia helped awaken Saudade from her jar, and upon properly getting to meet her, quickly became smitten with the gentle Guardian Stygian. He cares for her deeply, appreciating her patience with his way of speaking and her kindness towards all. She is intelligent, thoughtful and empathetic, and he admires her for it. They lead this odd little 'herd' together, and there is no one else he'd rather have at his side.
Rui
Initially seeing Rui as more of a pet than anything, after she regained her Treatling form their dynamic became more like bickering siblings, and he sees her as an annoying sister of sorts. Though he's frequently exasperated by her more adventurous nature, he appreciates her loyalty and energy in his life. And though he complains about how talkative she is, he's secretly grateful for it - it's helped with his own difficulties speaking. She's his best friend - but he'll never say it out loud.
Lunera
The first of Somnia's 'neighbors' that he met, and the first to join him and Rui back when they were still a ragtag duo. He appreciates Lunera's self-assurance and faith and how far it carried them, but admits she and Rui get along better - in a less than enthusisatic way. They're a troublesome pair. Their love of mischief and teasing has no doubt caused him quite a bit of exasperation.
Sundance
Somnia gets along with the more carefree Stygian, even if they don't always see eye to eye. Though they find similarity in their distant natures, where Somnia is dedicated to the Nightmare Tree, Sundance is much more lenient, content to let things fly him by. Of the whole group of friends, he is the only one who has declined to have his Kingdom housed within Somnia's - but he respects this, and the offer will always be open.
Nineveh
These two get along quite well - perhaps because they are both quiet by nature, and are able to find contentment even in times of silence. Nineveh is rather more uncertain and nervous however, and seeks to better her confidence. As a result, Somnia has taken her on as a pupil of sorts, training her to become stronger and find assurance in herself, even if she cannot voice it.
Wistalia
Somnia enjoys her company, partly because of Wistalia's own bright nature, and partly because Saudade cares very much for her. He admires her attitude, for though Wistalia is clumsy and rather inexperienced, she throws herself into everything she tries with gusto. He trusts she'll be able to find her feet one of these days.
'Holo'
A sleepy little Feline Treat that Somnia regards not unlike a pet. He likes Holo just fine, and will happily indulge in petting the cat-like creature when he lazily mews for it. Somnia knows however, that there will continue to be a bit of an awkward tinge to being around Holo - knowing that he has the capability to be sentient but has not regained it yet...it is not a fact he can ignore.
Vengeance
Somnia respects her strength and resolve, even knowing that means Ven will never allow herself to grow close to any of them. Her aggressive nature does keep him a bit wary, but they both know she knows better than to fight a Legendary. And, recognizing that strength of his, she does (begrudgingly) respect him in turn. Like Sundance, her Kingdom remains separate.
'Comet'
Though he wishes to regard Comet as a friend, at the moment Somnia understands that he is very averse to the idea. He is willing to give the stand-offish and confused Treatling his space and let him work through his thoughts on his own, but he is also quite willing to lend Comet his help when he is ready to accept it.

Chapters
Chapter 0
Beginning Load StateSomnia has been around for some time now, old enough to have been part of the Hundred Years War - however, as a result of his isolation, these events were actually entirely unknown to him. It wasn't until he got caught up with Rui, his then still only Treat companion, and left his kingdom that he learned of it and its unfortunate results. Despite his loyalty to the Nightmare Tree, Somnia holds no dislike for Treatling kind nor the Dream realm - and hopes that one day the two realms and their denizens may come to at least tolerate one another, if only to prevent any further conflicts.
Prior to this, Somnia spent countless years completely isolated within his own kingdom, weaving his nightmares and leading a relatively repetitive but calm existence. He was aware of other Stygian of course, but though he felt curious of them he kept himself apart, instead focusing on his own realm in the name of the Nightmare Tree. And he may have continued such a life for all time, but then, during one of his nightmares, something odd happened...
Somnia was jarred into ending it. And in doing so, he became aware of a little pink intruder in his realm.
Chapter 1
DREAM-ONLINE Load StateIn his attempts to learn and experience more of the world outside his realm, Somnia took an interest in the newly released video game, DREAM-ONLINE (admittedly with more curiosity than the average player, as he didn't even know what a video game was at the time). He was much more interested in all the things one could do on the side, like potion-making, crafting, mining and the like, and would have been perfectly content ignoring the main quests. But at Rui's (and Princess') insistence, he rather unwillingly took up the mantle to try to be the 'hero'. It went about as well as you'd think it would. Needless to say, Somnia did not exactly appreciate the existential crisis thrust upon him by the events that followed the malfunction of his save file and watching his other self die. But, true to his word, he will not forget that other self - keeping their memory alive is the least he can do.
These days, the main reason he returns to the game at all is to help his friends get through the Dreamlands, or to attend to the smaller aspects of the game he initially enjoyed. No more main questing for this fellow, at least not for a long while...
Chapter 2
Legendary Ascension Load StateDespite the...troubles the previous event left him with, Somnia did not withdraw back into himself and his realm - not for lack of trying once or twice, admittedly, but Rui was a persistent Treat. And his own curiosity had been piqued - it was unlikely he'd ever go back to his life of total isolation. This was only further cemented by Rui regaining her Treatling form.
With her pushing him to explore and see more of the Nightmare Realm and his own inquisitiveness spurring him on, Somnia's life went through quite a few rapid changes. In meeting Lunera and helping to awaken Saudade, Somnia was able to form a team to tackle the adventure zones, eventually growing strong enough to defeat the Guardian. And in befriending Nineveh and Wistalia, Somnia soon had formed something of a 'herd', something beyond the tree that he felt he could dedicate himself to and protect. Sundance and Vengeance's polarizingly different mindsets gave him much to ponder. In between all this, he fished, and gardened, and explored. And he found that beyond learning and observing, he was having a great deal of fun.
In response to his dedication to his nightmares and his own personal growth, the Nightmare Tree offered to him a branch, and Somnia ascended to become the Child of Loneliness. With his newfound abilites as a Divine, he began to shelter the kingdoms of his closest companions within his own. He finds the fact that he is doing this is fairly amusing, considering it is rather in contrast to the concept of his branch. But given that their nightmares so far all have some variation of loneliness within their themes, he finds it appropriate, too.
