Kurtis is a dhampir. Which is just a fancy way of saying that he is ONLY half vampire.
This mistake happens when a decent human woman finds herself with a very indecent companion.
Resulting in a nearly dead off-spring. Both distasteful and frightful to those from the dead-er side of the family.
Why? Well, Dhampir's have this funny little trait that allowed their bite to paralyze vampires.
Their blood, although half, is nearly poison to the undead. And here by dangerous to come into contact with.
Most are abandoned by their vampire fathers and become hunters. As most women don't survive the birth.
Kurtis wasn't so lucky. His hyperactive and overly attentive father wanted him.
And now he lives with the childish wingnut. No pun intended.
. . .he just wants his own space.
