Everyday I'm making strange faces Everyday I'm sticking out my tongue

. personality

When not under the influence--or on high doses of anxiety medication, Harper appears paranoid and flighty at even the smallest social interaction. From such information, it's easy to infer that they have incredible difficulty managing stress and often turn to quick fixes in order to cope in the moment. This likely stems from their inability to face reality for what it is--as dealing with such issues require feeling worse before it feels better. The majority of the time, however; they don't have to focus on their fears, and running away into a calm haze is preferable to constant unmanageable stress. Additionally, they enjoy being productive and find that medication greatly improves their motivation to work on creative projects. They mainly focus on knitting, in addition to other crafts that involve yarn or thread--and their favorite things to create are gifts for their friends.

Harper appears rather out of place in their friend group composed of petty criminals and drug dealers, however; the scene is much tamer than it seems. They gravitate towards the company of these less-than-hardened criminals because there's a sense of community among them--in addition to the fact they were each failed by society one way or another. They find comfort in the mutual feelings shared by their group, and it provides a space to vent freely with people who can understand on a deeper level.

. history

Harper's family dealt with plenty of setbacks while they were growing up, and in a ten person household it was rare for them to receive any individualized attention. In fact, there was a clear divide between the children the adults favored, and those who were essentially left to fend for themselves; Harper being one of the latter. Their grandmother became their only source of interaction, as the family was distant--and other children didn't know how to deal with their closed-off nature. While their grandmother wasn't the nicest or the most nurturing, she didn't mind the company since she was also isolated in the home. Her age left her weak and frail, and thus she was bedridden for the majority of the day with Harper being her most frequent visitor. Her eventual death hit them hard, and further contributed to their lack of social development during crucial years of their life. The years after her death up until high school graduation passed by in a blur, and Harper has trouble placing events of what happened since they were so caught up in grief and a festering anxiety disorder. Upon graduating, however; they had the freedom to seek counseling for their problems and are now on medications to manage, although pills don't always work as well as Harper wishes they would.

My dad says I let him down...

. trivia

one . [Harper picked up knitting from their grandmother, although she didn't actually teach them the process. It required a lot of trial and error on their part, as the way they taught themself was by watching and mimicking her as she worked.]

two . [When they first gained the freedom to seek a diagnosis, Harper was overenthusiastic about finding a cause for their problems. However, they soon discovered that those causes were deeply painful and they were unwilling to revisit them. In this sense, Harper is substituting legitimate recovery with prescriptions and while the medications are helpful--they know deep down that they need to deal with the underlying issues eventually.]

four . [Harper is an amab individual, but their gender lies somewhere off the spectrum and they've chosen to label themself as nonbinary. For the sake of having things simple, however; they're comfortable going by any pronouns, but their preference does fluctuate depending on the day. As for gender expression, Harper usually presents themself neutrally or more masculine. While they would love the opportunity to wear more feminine clothing, they're uncomfortable with the attention and don't want to be misinterpreted as a crossdresser--or any other fetishizing label. Because of these fears, they typically keep their skirts and such in the closet unless they're hanging around people they intimately trust.]

five . [They become a bit of a slob during rough patches, and you can almost always tell how they're feeling based on the state of their room. If every drawer is open and strewn on the floor among leftover pizza boxes, that's how you know they need comforting.]

...But I don't care
