celestial shining pearl

you are responsible for what you have tamed.

captivating . fickle . provocative

A star of peerless radiance, many have opined that Hoshino Ayumu far outshines the heavenly bodies he studies through his telescope. Indeed, few have made Ayumu's acquaintance who haven't found themselves charmed by his mercurial passions, his eccentric charisma, his razor wit -- and, of course, his unrivaled beauty.

Extending beyond his acquaintance, however, proves more difficult for most. If it's said that every rose has its thorns, it must go triple for Ayumu, whose charm belies no shortage of little cruelties. And even overlooking any nastier parts of his nature, it's undeniable that he tends to lose interest in people even more quickly than he does in pastimes...

o n e . oh, how beautiful you are / you're perfect

Ayumu has always been eccentric.

The only child of the famous (and famously strange) prosthetist Hoshino Ayato, Ayumu grew up poised on the juncture of two interesting but not entirely incompatible ideas: that perfection was expected of them, and that they were inherently, irrevocably perfect. From their cradle days, they were awarded the loveliest clothes, the finest education, the most elegant luxuries -- and, of course, a wealth of their parent's attentions.

Perhaps it's for this reason that Ayumu has always been quick to bore. Being exceptionally bright and hard-working both, Ayumu's vice, then, was (and remains) sticking power. His interests are as rich as they are varied; he's been known to immerse in them to the point of sleeplessness. Still, be it two weeks or two days, the interest always fades, and Ayumu is left to move on to the next flight of fancy.

There are two exceptions to this. The first, as one might guess, is astronomy, a childhood passion turned lifelong pursuit. As for the second...

t w o . it was there they shared their first sunrise

When Ayumu was twelve, Hoshino-sensei took a trip to Japan that, for a labyrinth of reasons, extended over a year.

Ever-opportunistic, Ayumu took this time to do things Sensei would never allow them to do. Of this cascade of one-off rebellions, perhaps the most vital was the decision to go exploring one Caer Sidi's most destitute neighborhoods -- a far, far walk from the ivory tower of Sensei's estate. It was here that he met and befriended a boy one year his junior, whose existence would eventually become a central point in Ayumu's life: one Orion du Nord.

It's for good reason that opposites are said to attract. Between the two of them, Orion and Ayumu had no shortage of things to talk about, to do, so try. Even when this novelty faded, however, Ayumu was surprised to find that Orion still captured his interest. And so the two became inseparable. And so the illness that loomed over Orion's head, death like a sword of Damocles, became increasingly unsettling.

Ayumu rarely wanted for anything. Where Orion existed in a constant state of loss, life a post-script, it was a foreign experience to Ayumu. What little control he had, he exerted: "We'll die together, okay, Ori?"

t h r e e . but the rose in her vanity: my glass globe, now. my beauty. my screen.

After a few years, however, Ayumu did get bored -- though not of Orion.

As adolescence pressed on, so too did the urge to do more. The slums were rife with opportunity, especially for those unafraid of the unsavory -- and no one had ever accused Ayumu of being afraid before. Thus began their foray into Caer Sidi's criminal underworld. Pretty, young, and often reckless, the two of them eventually found themselves entangled in escapades both extravagant and gruesome, risque and mundane, with Natalia Beck and Morgan White.

For all its dangers, horrors, and general inconceniences, their work was nothing if not thrilling. Orion tended to his mother, and Ayumu attended enough school to make Sensei happy, but the rest of their time was spent out, twined together in whatever their work saw them doing on a given day. For some time -- years, in fact -- it seemed that Ayumu had found the perfect antidote to boredom, and with the petty pricetag of conventional morality.

It crumbled, of course. A domino effect of mistakes and coincidences over the course of one evening, and Ayumu would later remember little to none of it -- not for any reason typical to (then-nonexistent) Unbleeders, but rather nearly entirely by choice.

f i v e . of course i love you (please forgive me)

And so, with a certificate of completion for physical rehab and a closet full of beautiful prosthetic legs in, Ayumu launched back into normality -- that is to say, forged a new normality from what little he had before. He leafed through hobbies at the usual breakneck pace; he sailed through a bachelor's degree in astronomy and on towards a Ph.D.; he flitted from fling to fling with Odyssean intent, certain that eventually he and Orion would reunite eventually.

But with his own fuzzy memories and Sensei's gentle intervention, reunion was difficult to directly pursue. Instead, when Ayumu voluntarily underwent the Unbleeder procedure at 23, he purchased Unbleeder insurance for Orion as well.

It was six years after their separating incident that the two met again. The two crashed into orbit. Orion was furious at Ayumu for never getting back in touch; Ayumu's absence and reasons therefore glanced off him at strange angles. Any love remaining between them -- and, everything else notwithstanding, the sheer enormity of that love could not be denied -- was complicated and messy, made even moreso by time and distance. Not to mention the increasing deterioration of Orion's health...

...or the fact that Ayumu had robbed him of his ability to die, which Orion found out when he was revived. Still, after no small amount of conflict, Ayumu was able to convince Orion (or perhaps Orion was able to convince himself) that Ayumu was simply trying to keep their promise: that some day, when immortality proved imperfect, they would die together.

Since then, things have settled beautifully in Ayumu's life -- a return, perhaps, to the perfection that has always been his due and duty. A perfect boyfriend. A perfect apartment. A perfect thesis on its way to defense. And if that perfection fails to entirely quell the nameless dread in the back of their mind... well, luckily Ayumu is a dab hand at distracting himself.

Trivia

  • A handful of their most recent fixations include: video game series Hitman, re-translating the Epic of Gilgamesh from the original Akkadian, weaving scoubidou bracelets, and 18th century window moldings.
  • They have never had more than an inch of their hair cut off, except once as a child, when gum got caught in it. The culprit was never caught, but Ayumu probably deserved it.
  • In the morning, they make coffee before they shower, and drink it cold after.
  • They chose pearl for their insert based on the star they associate themself with (γ Ursae Majoris), but they started associating themself with that star because the first earrings their parent picked out for them were freshly made from just-harvested pearls.

  • They have freckles! ...though they often cover them with make-up.
  • Tends to wear layers that he sort of... naturally sheds throughout the day.
  • Fond of all sorts of jewelry, including for their inserts.
