Fake it 'til you make it- That's what Kurai was always told growing up anyway. His parents grew up poor and ran away together to join Team Rocket under Giovanni's leadership. After Team Rocket's disbandment, the couple managed to steal a lot from the Villainous Group and later resale it, becoming rich. Finally settling down in Castelia City in the Unova region, they became great investors in some unsavory groups.

Growing up, Kurai was a very sheltered boy, being cared for hand and foot by nannies and not being allowed much time out on his own. After years of begging he was finally given his first Pokemon, a Slakoth. Disappointed and feeling like he could never train it, it did not receive much attention from the boy.

Becoming tired of his parent's bullshit, Kurai ran away after hearing of Starlight Town. Knowing it would be a place he could mold and shape to his own ideals. To his surprise, he found Slakoth's Pokeball stuffed in the bottom of his runaway bag, later thankful when the Pokemon was able to keep him warm, probably saving his life. Later the two met a Litwick that joined the party after being spooked in an abandoned house.
