GUARDIAN DUTIES

"It ain't a perfect system, but it's the one we live in."

Hollowpoint is currently a guardian angel, and he doesn't plan on retiring anytime soon. Somewhat of an overachiever, he can be quite bad at giving himself a break from his duty, causing him to come across as rather snappy when he's interrupted for trivial reasons. He also has a hard time taking his mind off it even when not watching his mortal, made even worse by the fact that his current charge is not only always getting into trouble but also... somehow supposed to live past 100 years?

He takes pride in his position as a guardian, and the high standards he sets for himself tend to give off the impression of a judgemental individual who cares about success above all else. However, those who know him may come to realize that his near-perfectionist ideals mostly just apply to himself.

He has his doubts for whether the punishment for failure is reasonable, and he's not the best at keeping those thoughts to himself once asked. There are many things about the system that he cannot find himself agreeing with. He also dislikes lying and is horrible at it. He's seen his fair share of fallens that seem more than capable of upholding the duty of a guardian, and heavenly peers who are the opposite.

On top of the usual guardian duties, there are also words going around that he's sometimes tasked with eradicating certain dangerous individuals. He doesn't deny when confronted about it, either, though he always tries to avoid elaborating on it. One thing's for sure, though—he only targets those whose morals he cannot agree with.

HOBBIES

Being overly strict and harsh on himself, he often needs to find excuses to justify his own hobbies by connecting them to his guardian duties, such as convincing himself that studying firearms helps him more effectively protect his mortal charge, and saying that taking care of a garden makes his mortal diguise as a preacher more convincing and less threatening. While there's often some truth in those statements, one can definitely argue that he doesn't need them simply to enjoy things. He's still slowly working on allowing himself some more breaks.

There are still a few things he seems to just do without questioning, though, such as watching the sky while he's in the mortal realm. (He especially loves watching sunrises and sunsets.) He's learned to appreciate small things in life when he has the leisure to.

MORALS

"What can I say? I like t' shoot straight."

For the most part, Hollowpoint operates on his own principles of what is acceptable and what isn't, and can come across as stubborn when faced with criticism from people he doesn't already know or hold in high regard. He can also be rather blunt when it comes to expressing his opinions, which doesn't exactly make him the most likeable fellow, but he doesn't let it bother him. Those who can put up with him will stick around anyway, and he sees nothing wrong with simply speaking his mind.

He disdains those who go out of their way to harm the innocent, and believes someone who does it for pleasure or a general disregard for the consequences of their own actions deserve to suffer. These morals of his do not extend to game hunting, however, which he sees as a great pastime and display of skill as long as nothing goes to waste. Some may say it's his way of keeping his sadistic tendencies in check...

He often only uses his weapons in ways he deems "within reason", but he also believes that there are rare scenerios where it's excusable. His justification for his occasional impulsive actions may tread into the territory of hypocrisy, though, depending on how one views it.

HUMBLE

Hollowpoint is rather irritable, but he's still a protective and compassionate guy at the end of the day. He acts like a tough and strict individual who only cares about success, yet he has a hard time hiding that he does care about those who are vulnerable around him. He's a terrible liar, after all. He also has a soft spot for those who simply mean well, as well as former wrong-doers who have decided to change for the better.

Despite being relatively young for an ageless being, Hollowpoint shows a considerable disconnect from modern technology and pop media, spending most his off-duty time studying firearms and honing his shooting skills. He also has expertise in identifying and growing succulents and herbs, although that's a lesser known fact.

BIOGRAPHY

BACKGROUND

CW // Semi-graphic death mention

Born from the bond between the victim to a horrific crime and a gunslinger who failed to avenge them, Hollowpoint's appearance bears a striking resemblance to the latter, who perished in an attempt at vigilantism. One could even suggest that his existence is almost "vengeful" in a way, and the fact that he set foot in the town where the gunslinger was murdered a century later under the guise of a preacher only further reinforces that impression. For those who know of the incident—by word of mouth from their older generations or otherwise—his presence is a constant reminder of what happened so many years ago—the undignified death of a man who swore to bring justice to the world under a corrupt system.

The times are different, and the town isn't what it used to be, yet from the retellings of the tale and preserved photos, no one can deny that the man who goes by Harrison Gunner is a spitting image of the dead man found with a bullet shot right through his left eye and coming out the other side of his skull, left to rot in a dead end with his features frozen in an expression of shock. It's almost as if the man hadn't died in the first place, time had never passed ever since, and he had come for revenge with the holy texts in his hand and burning sulfur on his breath.

However, his true goal is beyond their understanding. He's here because his absolute himbo of an assigned mortal happens to live in this town... working a dangerous job wrangling angry bulls in a bullfighting ring. Hollowpoint justifies his interaction with mortals with his firm belief that he must fabricate an entire identity in the mortal realm for his disguise to be effective, conveniently ignoring the funny looks he gets for resembling the man whose immense guilt and shame essentially led to his existence.

QUOTES

ON TECHNOLOGY

"Ya see this here gun I'm holdin'? That's 'technology', 'n I trust this lil' darlin' 'cause I know how to use it. Learn t' use yer tools, don't let 'em control you."

ON COOKING

"... Yes, yes, I know, we heavelies don't gotta eat to survive, but cookin' up meals is one of the few things that help me take my mind off all 'em unpleasant matters. Dunno how t' explain it. 'N I'm not talkin 'bout those packets ya get at stores where ya just heat it up 'n it's ready t' go. A lot less satifyin' that way. At least my mortal doesn't mind my cookin' when I need t' feed that dumbass. (But then again, he seems to just eat anythin' that doesn't kill him.) 'N the kids in town love gettin' treats from their 'Father Harry'."

ON THE PEAK'S RULES

"Don't get me wrong—now I'm not sayin' rules 'n all that stuff ain't necessary, but sometimes they're plain ridiculous 'n I'm not even gonna pretend they aren't. Still feel the need to stick t' 'em, though, gettin' raised in the system 'n all. Y'know how it is."

ON FALLEN ANGEMOS

"I'm kinda friendly with some fallen folk, born that way or not, but in a way, they scare me. It's not that I hate 'em—'cause I don't. So long as they're not actively doin' harm, we're cool. It's... more so they remind me o' how I might end up if I failed this job, y'know? Hurts to think 'bout, 'n I bet it'd hurt more if it happened, literally. Watched a few o' those public wing clippings; hated each time I did."

"I know there're many folks who think I got somethin' against the fallens, but if ya ask me? It's not their existence that bugs me. It's more so that bein' 'round 'em forces me to confront the reality... the flaws in our system, 'n it goes against all I was taught back in trainin'. I know it's kinda selfish thinkin' on my part—it's by no means honorable, but at least I'm honest 'bout how I feel."

MISC

TRIVIA

  • He is named after hollowpoint bullets, a type of ammunition typically used for hunting or self defense. The badge on his chest is also based on the appearance of an expanded hollowpoint bullet.
  • The gun in his masterlist/main reference image is based on a Winchester 1873 rifle, and the style of chaps worn in his main reference is known as "shotgun".
  • He has 2 "bone cages" on each head wing, 3 on each back wing, and 5 along the middle section of his tail.
  • The hoofprint design on the boots worn by his mortal disguise is meant to match the hooved legs in his regular appearance, but it's also inspired by "cow boots" used by moonshiners to disguise their own tracks, though with a more subtle design.
