Mike: I'm not one to get attached, I'm old, I don't really lead the kind of life that has room for love... Yet, Kleon has become the light of my life. Just being next to him is enough to brighten my day. When Kleon initially tried to tell me he liked me, I pushed him away, afraid of commitment, and I regret it immensely. Sometimes I'm not sure what he sees in me, but I'm glad to have him by my side. I love him, truly, and want to be with him for as long as possible.

Mike and Kleon first met in 2002 through Dr. Caldera, the shady veterinarian who both were connected to and received work from. The two would cross paths and be assigned to the same jobs multiple times, forming some sort of professional alliance. While at first Mike was reluctant, Kleon eventually convinced him to hang out together outside of their work and the two formed a close friendship. They were particularly fond of drinking at bars at night together and getting breakfast in the morning at Loyola's Family Restaurant.
Kleon started falling for Mike fast and obviously, feeling a strong attraction towards the stoic older man. Kleon had always been ridiculed and shun by others due to his race, skin condition, and identity, but Mike was the first person to never look down on him or treat him badly. While the cowboy considered all of their times together as dates, it took Mike a bit longer to be open to the idea of their relationship becoming anything beyond friendship, though he did secretly like Kleon a lot (even if he hid it very well). Eventually the two would officially start dating after a few months of their silent pining, sealed with a kiss Kleon initiated after they had a heart-to-heart late at night in Mike's car after one of their dates.

Escape
In 2009, after Walter White had killed Gus Fring and destroyed his drug empire, Mike and Kleon found themselves reluctantly working for Walter. They discussed numerous times on how they should just escape Albuquerque before it was too late, but it was Mike who always had to remind Kleon that they had people depending on them; namely Kaylee and the 10 men who worked under Mike.
Eventually the DEA catches onto the lawyer taking care of Mike's money, who rats on him. Mike haphazardly plans a last-minute attempt at escaping with Kleon, with succeeds with them driving north in Mike's car with nothing but the clothes on their back and Mike's "bug out" bag which included a lot of money.
