What is a Hulu Manu?

Hulu Manu are flightless birds that live mainly at the bases of Hawaiian volcanoes. They thrive in the warmer climates volcanoes provide, eating primarily fruit and leaves. Adult male Hulu Manu grow to be around 6', while females only reach a max height of 5' 5". Their eggs are around the size of an ostrich egg, and the hatchlings grow quickly from that size to roughly 4' tall within a few weeks.

The body of Hulu Manu is soft and smooth, like a lizard or snake. From the backs of their heads, their rears and their tails, large, colorful feathers grow. While they are mostly docile creatures, if needed they use the claws on the ends of their wings for self defense. Their horns have no practical use that we've been able to tell, other than to make them look like scary emus.

They make a variety of strange sounds, from screeching to ca-cawing, but the most common sound heard from them is a deep, warm purring sound, almost like a mix between a dove and a cat.
Where did they come from?

Hulu Manu were first discovered by a group of tourists who lost their way while traveling through the Hawaiian rain forests on Maui. While they might be large and intimidating, Hulu Manu are really just as curious about us as we are about them. Nobody is quite sure where they actually originated from, or how they came to be, but once you get to know one for yourself, you'll be glad for it.
