alistair is aware that he's in a fictional world and is only a background character!
he became suspicious of arlo for being one of the main characters because he's the "chosen one" who was transported from another realm, has a colorful palette, and is always on crazy adventures! alistair on the other hand leads a fairly boring life, so he makes it his mission to befriend arlo and become a more important character in the story. however, his "conspiracy theories" make him appear stupid and annoying to others, making it difficult for him to befriend anyone. nobody takes alistair seriously and he sometimes gets dragged into a psych ward, where he screams, "don't leave me here! i still need to befriend the main characters! i can't be abandoned in the abyss as an unimportant guy with no character development--!!!"
he also spies on arlo's friend group to make sure that he's caught up with "dreamland lore" and attempts to insert himself into the narrative by acting as a narrator, using his cane as a microphone. he often stares into the distance, convinced that there is a "hidden camera" recording his actions!
