Vaira was a ward of the state. Her parents were killed in a raid, and the state took her in. Training her to be a living historian. As soon as she was 20 she was given a job abroad, told to board the ship that would change her life forever. There were idiots aboard, except for the cook, Larina - a toucan Aarakocra. The two were fast friends, the bird woman teaching the dragoness how to cook.
A friendship for the ages blossomed over fighting for the best bathing suit on the island with a vapid elf... and ended with standing on the ship, talking before heading out. Larina being shot in head by an arrow. Pirates and fire and Vaira diving off the side of the ship taking her friend's corpse with her as the gunpowder exploded.
