Persephone

I like to take my time when picking out characters’ names, especially if it’s integral to their story, so I’m having her current given name act as a placeholder for now. 

Planning to put her in a story I’ve been thinking about for a while, involving an alternate dimension (the “other side”) and witch family lineages. She’d be the one telling the story, though she certainly isn’t the protagonist in it. That’s her cousin’s job alone.

Instead, she’s a witch, trained in the sacred art by her grandmother before the old woman passed away. She lives a relatively normal life in the real world, but when visiting the “other side” she’s always being pestered by ghosts and other monsters and creatures. Between her and her cousin, she’d be the more knowledgeable of the two (though still less than their grandmother or any permanent resident there), and introduce him to the basic ideas and taboos of the place.

Each witch has a medium they channel their energy through before releasing it into the world through their spells and magic, and for Persephone that’s her right eye. Through strain of use, there’s some decent scarring and she is partially blind in that eye. Fortunately, over time she has grasped a better control over her powers, and even if she went completely blind in that eye, she wouldn’t lose her abilities.

Side note, I absolutely adore her dress, and it made me think of adding in that each witch’s robe always becomes personalized through hard work and time. Sometimes the robe modifies itself, sometimes the witch themself chooses to change it. (Or something like it’s an old article of clothing passed from witch offspring to witch offspring, but all witches change and customize theirs to fit better with their style and/or the style of the times.)
