Kagura is the morally ambiguous trickster kitsune that lingers around a shrine dedicated to a kami spirit that is a fox... or at least fox shaped. She has been there for as long as the shrine maidens have kept records (or at least someone befitting her description), although the shrine itself is only a couple of hundred years old. She has never caused harm to the shrine itself, and to the shrine maidens she seems to only play small, fun-filled pranks on them.

To those who don't belong to the shrine and it's upkeep, Kagura is far less constrained. Money, small trinkets, and even food has disappeared from the belongings of those who have come to the shrine. One might suppose they were not true worshippers or didn't have the right attitude, but no one has asked the kitsune nor has she offered a reason resembling anything close to the truth.

Kagura's actual background is that she is the daughter of the kami this shrine is dedicated to, a kitsune in their own right who fell in love with a mortal and gave birth to Kagura. Left to the shrine maidens shortly after birth, those who knew the secret did not pass it down, and Kagura has had no desire to inform them of this, seeing it as another failing of being born a mortal.

• Deliberately ignores her mortal human parentage, and has no desire to seek out their other parent.
