écharpe, named after the french word for scarf, was rescued and subsequently adopted by a french avianologist (or ornithologist) who had wrapped the small bird boy child in a thick woolen scarf, returning to the lab. écharpe suffered wounds from a snake attack, which had eaten his other siblings as hatchlings, before starting on him (hence why he is missing limbs, etc etc) écharpe had grown to trust the scientist, who tried to teach him alternative communication skills, through expression, body language and art. Nothing really stuck, as he continues to act in a manner appropriate for a child, despite being full grown (for a bird boy), and instead expresses himself with squawk/squeaks and fluttering his wing.
As time went on, écharpe grew more curious of the world, attempting to leave one day on his own, and the scientist, fearing the worst, locked him in a bird cage, shackling his leg to the inside.
