Carolus is a gifted young man with hopeful beginnings turned pirate by unfortunate events. He is the only son of an influential celebrity family who once trusted his family completely. After returning from school to find his mother's body and his father's been inprisoned, he no longer knows what to think. For months he spiraled on the streets, drank too much, got into brawls, wasted away savings, until he was caught up in a pirate raid. Carolus, desperate to escape his homeland and swayed by the easy earning, joins the pirate crew of Johann Melville. His intellect wins over the captain, who takes Carolus under his wing.
