Synesthesia

Not only did Alaric's enhanced magical prowess develop in unwanted forms, his crosswired senses rend him more sensitive to stimuli, with a single sensation triggering responses from multiple senses. Due to this, Alaric is easily overwhelmed, with audible or verbally expressed emotions appearing as colours in his vision, and visible motion generating music. Facial expressions are associated with the colour of their corresponding emotion, with graphemes (letters, numbers and symbols) taking on the connotations of these emotions according to the colour Alaric perceives them to be. When overwhelmed with stimuli, he increasingly struggles to differentiate between his senses, and as such typically prefers more plain and simple environments, often retreating to quiet spaces.

Formless Magic

Due to his synesthesia, Alaric's magic is formless, with his spells taking the appearance of cymatics rather than the traditional ordered rune circles. By merely tweaking his spell to harmonise the magic's tune, he is able to cast spells without the need for the extensive studying and memorisation of the relevant rune circles, granting him the ability to master a wide array of spells.

Despite how this allowed Alaric to cast stronger and more complex spells far quicker than his peers, his tutors berated him for it, urging him to abandon the use of his unprofessional, 'mangled' rune circles. Being seen as cheap or lazy shortcuts by some, and a direct rebellion against structured magic by others, Alaric quickly learnt to ignore his instinctive spell casting method, resigning himself to the arduous challenge of using rune circles.

However, after leaving Larielis, with no pressure to conform to ancient societal norms Alaric's magic was free to take its much purer, natural form.

About

As a young synesthetic Thaen descended from one of the most prestigious and fearsome mages in history, for all his grand heritage, Alaric is fairly unassuming. Soft spoken, he has a calm temperament and rarely expresses anger, often seeking solitude or quiet conversation with one or few others at a time. Although he hates attention, he often defaults to adopting a more responsible role in the group, his gentle nature making him a caring, if informal leader.

With the society of his homeland taking pride in great magical prowess, Alaric has spent his life overshadowed by the fame of his distant ancestor, Sylverski. Because of the way his culture works, Alaric's name is a legacy he can't hope to live up to, his very name a tale of his bloodline's tragic fall from power. In an attempt to restore this so dearly coveted greatness and power to his family line, the Thaen elders magically induced synesthesia in Alaric as a child, hoping that the crossover of his senses would grant him an innate capability for understanding magic. This experiment was hoped to pave the way for a new age of Thaen, magically engineered to be more powerful with each successive generation, instead of their society's slow decline in power. However the experiment did not quite deliver results in the way they wanted.

Personality

Soft but sometimes salty. He has a strong sense of justice and is open minded despite his heritage. He is trusting, eager to learn, thoughtful, and kind. He loves travelling and exploring, taking joy in helping the people he meets along the way. Due to growing up in the Thaen's elitist and somewhat racist society, Alaric is ignorant of the wider world's cultures, habouring many inherited prejudicies. Despite this he would never voice quickly made criticisms and is working to overcome this ingrained flaw. He heavily doubts himself and his capabilities, and can be easily overwhelmed by large amounts of stimuli due to his synesthesia.

His face is very expressive, however he maintains a calm demeanour for the most part, as extreme emotions are often accompanied by his magic getting out of hand. However, on the rare occasions when his emotions do break free, they play out on his face for all to see - since he's never had the need to practise hiding them.
