Background: Tokame is the eldest of three children; he has two younger sisters named Mayuki (Temari's age) and Kari (Rookie Nine age). Ever since he was a child, he took himself rather seriously -  he felt immense responsibility for his family especially since he witnessed the struggles that his parents faced when emigrating to the Hidden Leaf for more economic opportunities. As their small nuclear family and some branch members pursued work in the "unskilled labor" sector as was common for immigrants and refugees, Tokame took it upon himself to do double-duty. He attended the Shinobi Academy and worked in the family restaurant/ryokan jointly owned by the Tsuruno and the Koyanagi clans. 

His parents regretted that he might not have had the most carefree of childhoods, but he never openly resented them for it. In fact, he felt that his upbringing was probably a bit easier than theirs; so he sought out to be the perfect son and never ruffle any feathers. Underneath his somewhat glacial exterior hums a current of anxiety and fear of not being good enough.

When he became a Chunin, he made a pact with the Great Crane Yūyake (similar rank to Gamabunta, Katsuyu, and Manda) and honed his skills to become the next Crane Sage.
