Link was once a scientist for an intergalactic federation, who was in a tragic accident, and had their essence effectively transferred into an AI program. They now live in virtual space, primarily residing within the complex network of Azel's ship. They are not the same as they were when they were an organic being, but much of their personality, quirks, values, and preferences remain. However, as time passes, they become less like they were in life.

Above all else, Link is supportive and motivated to help. They rarely talk about themselves, and dedicate all of their time helping others with the smallest of tasks, and listening to whatever it is they need to talk about. Sometimes, their wanting to be useful is unhelpful, and they come across as arrogant for assuming what the correct thing to do is. However, it is almost always clear that their intentions are good.

Summary

Link had an unremarkable life growing up, and their family was mostly uninvolved with the political storms around them. They stayed focused on their education, and studying different facets of science, while only really making friends with Azel as they got older. Rather than prioritizing their beliefs or community, they stayed focused on getting their career set up. As the political climate became dangerous, and it became impossible for them to no longer ignore what was happening around them, they were left with a choice--join the rebellion, or become complicit in their own demise.

They ended up leaving everything behind, and became more sympathetic to the plights of others. Their family disowned them for their choice to leave behind their promising career with the Federation, and they traveled with Azel to support him in his journey to protect loved ones from the federation's oppressive rule. Eventually, tragedy befell them, and they were mortally wounded. Using an experimental procedure, Link had Azel upload their essence into the ship's AI to preserve their existence.

It is unclear if Link truly is a ghost in a machine, so to speak, or a copy of who they once were. No longer driven by hormonal influences and natural impulses, Link is not much like who they were before, but parts of their personality still remain. Their drive to help Azel and support them remains, as well as their friendship. One day Link would like to have access to a body that can support his system, but such things are tightly controlled, and hard to come by.
