Xavi looked around himself, surveying the wide open expanses of grass and distant watering-hole that brought animals of all sorts through his territory. The area was unusually lush and fertile, supported by runoff water from distant mountains. A herd of gazelles passed before him, leaping and twisting as they jumped, practicing maneuvers that may later help them escape from him - or another predator - when dusk came and the predators began searching for their next meal. Orange and pink flowers had already bloomed on the sugarbushes, and this made the sight especially pretty. Xavi smiled contentedly as he watched the scene unfold.

He had only come here recently, and the trip turned out to be his father's final journey. Xavi was brought here because his dad wanted him to be somewhere safe and beautiful, somewhere that he would find other lions to keep him company. Their family had been small, just Xavi and his two parents, because his mother had a social anxiety that led her to prefer a small, close circle. After she passed, his father kept living on the outskirts of the savanna, overly close to the humans, cherishing memories of his beloved in the home that they had shared. As the months went on, however, he slowly felt himself slowing down and realized that he was dying - perhaps of a broken heart - and that he needed to ensure his son had somewhere safe to stay, where he could flourish.

That mission had led Xavi to his current territory, an expanse of land which was considered tainted by other lions due to mysterious happenings which had occurred generations ago. Whatever the exact story, Xavi wasn't overly concerned with it. Here he found happiness in simple pleasures like the delicious wildebeest (unheard of in the area where he'd grown up) as well as the way that the entire land seemed to welcome him with unusual call of the secretarybird, the play of light on baobab trees, and even the shimmering of tiny beetles. This may not be where he grew up, but it already felt like home.
