Beastars
Beastars (ビースターズ, Bīsutāzu?) is a manga series written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki and published by the Akita Shoten publishing house in the Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine from September 8, 2016 to the present, counting so far with 13 volumes. This series was the winner of the 2018 Taisho Manga Prize.
SYNOPSIS
At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, it’s personal relationships that maintain the fragile peace. Who among them is a Beastar—an academic and social role model destined to become a leader in a society naturally rife with mistrust?
Last night at Cherryton High School, an herbivore student was killed and eaten. Among the members of the drama club, the herbivores’ suspicions naturally turn to their carnivore classmates… The prime suspect? Legosi, a large wolf. But he wouldn’t hurt a fly—or would he? And will dwarf rabbit Haru bring out the beast in him? Or are his feelings for her…something else?

Beastars (ビースター, Bīsutā) is the term that is awarded to the beasts that manage to stand out in society and unite them despite the differences between species
Each school in the world must propose to one of its students that they have enough influence, to be selected as candidates to be a Beastars, but it can not necessarily be a Beastar by academic means, it has also been shown that public officials managed to reach to become Beastars, fighting against crime.
Being a Beastars means watching over the animal society, solving the existing problems and improving everyone's day-to-day life. The way to choose new beastars takes place in a meeting with all the existing beastars, where they choose the new candidates.
So far it is known that the Cherryton High School has been 5 years without proposing a Beastars, its main candidate Louis, rejected the offer after living the harsh reality of the society in which it is located. Other students like Pina and Juno were encouraged to fight for this position, but failed to obtain it.
Black Market (裏市, Ura shi?) is a secret locality of the Beastars universe.
The Black Market is a back alley in the center of the city. It is usually seen as taboo to go there, as Louis warns the other members of the Drama club to not step foot into the market.
The Market sells taboo items, animal blood, meat and other things considered obscene.
Gangs
The Black Market is home to three major criminal organisations.
Cherryton Academy (チェリートン学園, Cherīton gakuen?) is Legosi's school featured in the Beastars manga.
Cherryton is a boarding school, featuring separate dorms for both carnivores and herbivores.
The school is on top of a hill, so the city center is quite far away.
The academies' emblem looks like a triangle, but it's actually a footstep. Reptiles at the school who don't have paws, don't seen to like the emblem.
Cherryton seems to be quite a famous school, as even Gouhin knows about its elite status.
Clubs and Extracurricular Activities
Cherryton Academy is stated in Chapter 53 to have the "highest number of talents". These include:
- Drama club
- Gardening club
- Sports/PE
- Cycling club
These can include products for herbivores or carnivores, special dishes/food, and brand-names derived from real-world equivalents.
Drink
- MaiMai Milk: Delicious nutrients, full of joy! a cow-milk brand.
Generic Products
- Herbal Strength Restrainers:: Pills that decrease muscle mass. Bear students over two meters tall are required to take these pills once every night.
- BeastBook: Beastar's version of Facebook.
- Metal Mouse: A sports-goods brandname. They design sports clothing and footwear for young carnivores, looking to aim towards the younger adolescent age group.
- Zoozle: Beastar's version of Google.
The Black Market is home to several illegal products and substances. These include:
Blood-Bone Drug: A mixture of herbivore blood and bone ground into powder. It frees carnivores from the guilt of eating meat while also satisfying their urges simultaneously. It is marketed as an energy drink for carnivores to deceive them into drinking it. Herbivore Pornography: Pornographic magazines sold within the Black market. Usually featuring smaller herbivores, like rabbits. It can also be assumed that the carnivore equivalent exists, as well.- The porn magazine shown in Beastars is called "Wild Kick".
The Shishigumi (シシ組, Shishigumi?) are one of the three major criminal organizations that control the Black market of Beastars.
The Shishigumi is an highly feared back-alley gang of lions. Their former boss used his status as leader to consume the meat of animals he saw as "exquisite".

The Shishigumi originally had a lion as leader, but after he was killed, the other members decided to make Louis their new boss.

In a work full of what seems to be herbivores and carnivores doing their best to live peacefully, there's a side that society seems to never talk about. But they're everywhere... look closer... Hybrids.
Hybrid city revolves around several hybrids that find lives involved in the back alley market and those around them.
