Alebrijes

Alebrijes are a kind of traditional Mexican craft depicting fantastical animals in the form of wooden or cardboard sculptures. They were first envisioned by Mexican artist Pedro Linares; the story goes that after falling severely ill, these creatures manifested in his fever dreams. They became extremely popular, and are now considered a part of our folklore and culture, particularly in the central valley and the southwest of the country.

The two most fundamental traits of the Alebrije are hybridization (their bodies are formed by the body parts of multiple animals) and their excentric colors and patterns.
