Vexinil Space Station is ancient. Rene Ehrvai Elus is the next in line to run it, selected by his mother Edra for his compatibility with the system, but amongst increasing blackouts, his own restlessness, and plans to move the station itself far away from any population centers, he is more unwilling to take the job every day.

So when an intruder on the station presents him with the perfect opportunity to leave, he decides to take it. But Vexinil isn’t just a space station: something in it is failing, and leaving it behind forever might be harder than Rene realized.
