this is “mantis” a word where human dna has been mixed with animals to create subhumans. in this dystopian world nuclear/hydrologic energy has substituted everything, so much so it powers lots of the hybrids that defend the centers of the world. after years of things going smoothly the world explodes and becomes mostly a fragmented archipelago. the “institute” is trying to find the dispersed people, to brainwash them or annihilate the rebels to start a new world without the remembrance of their faults. because of the huge amount of released nuclear material lots of these characters and animals wake up to new bodies and powers witch will help them fight against the “institute”.
