Flang's only friend. He sucks, but hey! Banter friends are best friends.
She knows this could be her chance, and she could protect herself forever by going with him; but the thought curdles like old milk in her gut when she considers all the ideas involved.
Derrin's friend! They have lively banter.
He would be an easy out for her, but she cannot stomach the thought of what would come next.
Top of Faolan's list of Most Hated Men.
She refuses to forgive him for the spats of their youth, and will not rest until she gets her hands on him and personally enacts justice.
Derrin's old enemy. He used to pick on her a lot.
After almost costing her her life when they were younger, Derrin has earned himself an enemy for life!
Nathan's fiancee. He wants her to be happy, but feels like she's holding back.
Miris's fiance. When they're not working, they're usually together.
Ms. Reaper's Anti-Wife. She spends most of her time evading Jillian's attempts to bring her back to Hell.
Jillian's Anti-Wife! She's very dedicated to making sure Ms. Reaper goes back to where she belongs, to the point of overstepping her own authority.
Asterisk's bitter enemy! She hates this guy! Her entire life's plan is about killing this man. Though, perhaps she's mostly chasing him because the second she stops she'll have to actually confront her trauma and grief--and, honestly, who wants to do that!?
Xerxat's enemy, I guess.
As they don't know each other personally, Xerxat has no honest ill will towards her.
If anything, he's waiting for her to come and get him.
Kaitlin's adviser. She finds him reliable and easy to work with, but the specter of Skye hangs heavy in the air when they're together. Being compared and contrasted with Skye isn't Kaitlin's favorite pastime, but it is one of Nathan's, apparently! Geez!!
Nathan's new charge! As an adviser to the throne, Nathan technically works directly under Kaitlin, and now should focus on giving her advice (even though Asterisk technically runs the ship). He sees a lot of Skye in her; but perhaps even more striking are the differences between them.
An old friend of Ast's. He was Skye's friend; that's how they met. Nowadays, Nathan is still employed as an adviser to the throne, and is maybe the only person who can express criticism and worry regarding Ast's personal life without facing repercussions.
Nathan's friend and current boss(?). Since he still remains a part of the board of advisers, Nathan often gives Asterisk advice, and the two of them share a highly unprofessional friendship.
Skye's best friend. He owes Nathan an essential life debt for helping him, years ago. When Skye took the Stygian Throne, Nathan came on as his main adviser and remained at his right hand until Skye's untimely death. Until he lost it, Skye trusted Nathan with his life.
Nathan's best friend. Skye showed up out of the blue one day, and Nathan picked him up and took him home. After gathering his bearings, Skye makes his way through the world and eventually climbs to King; Nathan loyally follows every step of the way and becomes his right-hand man.
A boy he killed. Not a day passes where Xerxat doesn't think about it.
As they never truly knew each other personally, Xerxat harbored no honest ill will toward Skye. It was a killing blow struck in uncontrollable emotion; in grief and envy and bitter despair. The repercussions did not kill Xerxat. He thinks they ought to have.
Skye's killer. As they never knew each other personally, Skye harbored no honest ill will toward Xerxat.
If they had a chance to speak again, Skye would likely offer sympathies rather than anger; that's just the kind of person he is.
Kaitlin's cousin. They lived together for a while before Kaitlin's mother took her back. Skye taught her to play chess. They were close as siblings.
His death was crushing for Kaitlin.
Skye's cousin. He spent a lot of time with her. Even though he was younger when they lived together, Skye understood how important the time they spent together was to her.
Asterisk's husband. His death is the major event that set Asterisk down this path.
Skye's spouse! They met a long time ago. When Skye was set to be King, he took Ast with him as Queen.
Erin's husband. Though they were married over a decade ago, she barely knows more than his name. It's a distance of her own making, and she is fine with that. She does not care for his life; though she considers his son her own, Erin couldn't muster a care in the world for Xerxat even if you threatened her.
Xerxat's wife. He is aware of most of the things Erin is allowing to happen in the castle, but doesn't move to stop her. He cares little for her; neither negatively nor positively. Though he sympathized with her situation and attempted to be friendly with her, she refused his friendship, and the two of them instead established a mutual distance that has lasted over a decade.
Faolan's favorite person aside from Erin. Zarni is a pirate who once upon a time was caught red-handed on a job from Black Kingdom; Faolan was the one to detain her. On the journey back to Alabaster for proper lawful sentencing, the two of them hit it off and they remain close friends to this day.
Zarni's partner. The two of them often work together and protect one another. They have a rewarding mutual give-and-take that brings out the best in each of them when they're around each other. However, if the balance becomes even slightly skewed, they are each perfectly capable of sundering the other, and they are both quite bad at communicating about this.
Erin's star-crossed lover. If Erin defines herself by the partners she's had, Zorina holds a lantern filled with every sweet and pleasant thing. The most alive Erin ever felt was on the sea with Captain Zorina--and the knowledge that her death will devastate Zorina completely makes her feel like she's already died. The two of them send letters back and forth, but Erin knows it is ultimately futile: that their relationship is doomed.
The love of Zorina's life. Though they both know they cannot be together, Zorina would still do anything for Erin; to keep her safe, to keep her happy, to keep her. They send letters back and forth; Zorina wholeheartedly believes she can save Erin somehow (someday).
Erin's bodyguard, though she has little need of such a thing. Faolan harbors deep respect and affection for Queen Erin, and the two enjoy a comfortable relationship. Faolan knows well that she hasn't been let in; not truly; but she is content to be where she is, most of the time. Although she trusts Faolan deeply, Erin does not let their relationship become anything more than physical.
Faolan's boss. She works directly under Erin and answers only to Erin. Her loyalty runs deep, and she would do just about anything for the Queen. Though the two of them enjoy a comfortable relationship, Faolan knows very well that Erin has never truly let her in emotionally.
They met many years ago, before Asterisk became Queen. Asterisk refuses to use their Brilliancy on Erin, and offers her the chance to escape the inevitable slaughter, but they both know Erin won't accept it--that Erin will die as a consequence of Ast's actions.
Erin's undoing and her remaking. Erin knows there's nothing she can do to stop Asterisk anymore--not now that they have Kaitlin under their thumb--but Erin also knows this: Asterisk will be irreparable, sundered for good. They will kill Erin and in doing so destroy themselves. Kindling and a flame, but neither knows which is which.
Ast picked her for the position of King, and is pulling her strings. Though they share mutual ties and an understanding they don't have with others, they also have a fundamental ideological conflict. Ast is aware and has accepted that this conflict will likely drive them apart irreparably one day.
Kaitlin's legally wedded spouse. Asterisk wants to use Kaitlin to kill a guy, and Kaitlin isn't super excited. On the other hand, Asterisk provides her invaluable help and support, and Kaitlin makes huge personal strides towards her own well-being thanks to Asterisk's encouragement. Though Asterisk is likely to accept being torn apart due to their ideological differences, Kaitlin is ready to stubbornly fight to keep Asterisk from going too dark.
They met soon after Kaitlin crossed the border into Flang's world; the meeting was not amicable, and ended with Flang handing her over to law enforcement (which caused a whole slew of pains for Kaitlin). Though they have their differences, they also have something priceless: balm for one another's wounds. They reunite after Kaitlin ascends to the Stygian Throne and Flang defects from White Kingdom, and become invaluable support for one another. It is a clean kind of healing only love can accomplish. To an outsider, their banter still sometimes seems to border on animosity--but that's just the way they talk.
Though Kaitlin should be everything Flang opposes (being King of the enemy kingdom and all that), once they reunite they instead find mutual support. They stabilize one another greatly. With Kaitlin's help, Flang is able to come out of her shell a bit and re-adjust after what is essentially a whole arc-long mental breakdown. Though these two never drop their rapid banter, there's deep affection underneath, and they can often be found spending soft quiet time in each other's company.
