Lore

At the beginning of time, a lonely dragon god roamed the heavens, looking for a companion. Lamenting his loneliness, his tears fell to the clouds and became lesser celestial beings, still capable of magic but without the same powers. They lived in harmony for a long time, until one of his creations, a power-hungry youth named Nerisse, rose up from the rest, determined to steal his potent magic from him and become the new ruler. Using deceit and cunning, she managed to stir up the peaceful setting and sow seeds of resentment towards their creator, starting a small series of uprisings that gave way to large-scale violent rebellion. Their creator, incensed and heartbroken by their betrayal, cursed them to lose their magic and fall from the heavens into the depths of the dark oceans. The previously beautiful celestial beings transformed into pitiful, miserable creatures marked with seals on their body suppressing their powers, destined to swim in gloomy waters until death. In a moment of mercy, the god blessed them with wish-granting magic, giving them the opportunity to redeem themselves through fulfilling other creatures’ desires. The magic spread throughout their body, causing certain parts of their body to glow in the dark, lighting up their journey throughout the shadows of the oceans. These creatures spread to every corner of the world, granting wishes and becoming intertwined in different mythologies. Humans knew them by many names ranging from celebratory to derogatory, calling them names that equated them to gods and ones that likened them to devils; but over time, these names have coalesced into a common moniker for these beings - Ly’riel, or “cursed blessing”.

APPEARANCE

Here is the rarity sheet for traits:

trait_sheet_PSD.png?width=802&height=935

Note: This sheet only includes traits that vary with rarity, look below for the complete list of traits and explanations behind them.

Base traits that all ly’riel (merform) have:

Bioluminescent spots around their body and clothing

  • In the dark, ly’riel’s suppressed celestial magic can be seen in small glowing spots on different parts of themselves. Each ly’riel has one and ONLY one glow color, the one they are born/cursed with.

Wish eye

  • The source of ly’riels' wish magic is found within one of their eyes which is marked by a magical seal on the skin surrounding it. Their wish eye glows in the dark in their own glow color (note: the color that the wish eye glows does not have to correspond to the regular eye color in the light. The wish eye will appear the normal eye color in the daylight).

Forehead seal and face tattoos

  • All ly’riel have a magical tattoo on their forehead that curls around their wish eye that acts as a seal suppressing the majority of their celestial magical powers. Depending on rarity, the tattoos sometimes extended past their face down their torso and in extreme cases, even onto their tail. The ends of these tattoos glow in the dark.

Aquatic Dragon Tail

  • These are generally 2-3x the length of their torso. They can be multicolored (eg. gradients or spots) however, no tattoo-like markings unless you purchase that trait.

Coral horns

  • These vary in size and no. of branches depending on rarity. Many ly’riel choose to decorate their horns with jewelry, flowers, stars, etc. Decorated horns are not an official ly’riel trait so you can decorate their horns with whatever you wish.

Side and end fins

  • After being cursed, Ly’riels’ previously regular dragon tail grew fins both on the sides and end to better equip them for roaming the waters. In darkness, the ends of their fins glow. Their end fins can take shapes different from the regular five-segment tail depending on rarity.

Feelers

  • Ly’riel have small feelers on the end of their side fins that help them navigate the waters more easily. These are also a main source of light in the dark as the glow from their feelers are nearly as strong as the wish eye glow.

Taur form

Ly’riel can also transfer to a lion form, however, even in lion form Ly’riel are aquatic and cannot go on land.

Their taur form looks like:

All aspects of their design minus the tail and fins transfer over to taur form (any clothing, tattoos, glowing spots). Any tattoos on the tail are transferred onto the lion back.

FAQ

(Please read through before you ask us any question about ly'riel!)

Q. Can I create my own Ly’riel?

A. This is a closed species, so you must purchase a MYO (make your own) slot before making your own. See the section above named MYO slots for more information on how to get them!

Q. Can I commission other artists to draw my MYO for me?

A. Yes! Be sure to credit the artist you commission.

Q. Who calls them ly’riel and who calls them 愿龙 (yuanlong)?

A. Ly’riel is a more everyday, neutral term for them while yuanlong is generally used in official mythology and carries a more positive connotation.

Q. What is the average lifespan of a ly’riel?

A. Immortal! Ly’riel don’t visibly age past a year of their choosing. While it is possible for them to die through certain magical processes, most choose to live out their full lives.

Q. Are ly’riel generally good or evil?

A. Ly’riel have generally human temperaments, meaning that you find ly’riel of all moral alignments in the seas. Some grant good wishes and some grant evil wishes but every type of wish counts towards the same goal of returning to the heavens.

Q. Do ly’riel have anthro forms?

A. No. They’re either half-dragon, or half-lion.

Q. How do the half-lion forms work?

A. Ly’riel are able to transform at will between lion and dragon, two important creatures in chinese mythology. Every ly’riel has two forms, and it’s up to you which one they’re in primarily. Our official ly’riel designs up for sale generally only include one form but since all aspects of the design (apart from the fins, feelers, and tail) transfer over to the lion form, it’s easy to design if you want to. cremesicles has made a handy-dandy taur form base for you to use if you would like.

Q. What do ly’riel eat?

A. They primarily eat fish, plankton, and various sea plants, but they’ll eat human food if they can get their hands on it. Unfortunately, human food in excess makes them sick so they can only eat small amounts of it.

Q. What do the seals do when ly’riel are in the process of granting wishes?

A. They glow brightly in the color that they usually glow in dark environments.

Q. What type of clothing do ly’riel generally wear?

A. There is no limit to what your ly’riel can wear! Although many choose to wear flowy clothing that doesn’t restrict movement and allows them to disguise themselves in kelp forests, everyone has a personal style, and this is true of ly’riel. Additionally, it depends on the kind of body of water they live in, as it may vary from  to open sea! Also, the setting we were thinking of when designing ly’riel was a more fantasy setting with more fantasy-like clothing , however, there are undoubtedly ly’riel out there in modern worlds who are influenced by modern human fashions.

Q. Do ly’riel belong to a specific world only or can I use them in my own worlds/stories?

A. Of course you can use them in your stories! ly’riel did all come from the same body of water a long time ago but over time they have traveled and made their way into pretty much every large body of water that exists. Some ly’riel choose to stay in communities of their species (the Lagoon) but they can exist anywhere with a large enough body of water. It is important to note that due to the smaller size of freshwater bodies, such as lakes, some ly’riel are more territorial and a limited amount will live in one area.

Q. What is the average height/length of a ly’riel?

A. The upper-body is generally proportional to one of a human upper-body and the tail tends to be about 2x the length of the upper body so adult Ly’riel are generally 7 - 10 feet long.

Q. How many wishes do ly’riel have to grant to reach their celestial form?

A. In order to appease their creator and rejoin him in the heavens, Ly’riel have to grant many, many wishes. It takes several centuries and sometimes even millennia to fulfill enough wishes to be pardoned for their betrayal.

Q. Do ly’riel have any legendary traits?

A. Legendary ly’riel possess one or more of the restricted traits named above. It’s in the name -- Only very powerful ly’riel are considered legends, and as such there are very limited amounts of  ly’riel who have legendary traits. Legendary traits are not open to the public, but you may find them in special event official designs.

Q. How are ly’riel born?

A. Much like how they were created in the first place, whenever the dragon god mourns the betrayal of the ly’riel and his tears falls to the clouds, new celestial beings are formed and are automatically cursed to fall into the oceans.
