The First Meeting

Sitting in a rather uncomfortable chair, the dark skinned male was looking over the file handed to him by his superior. It was that boring manilla color, a few pages paperclipped inside as his eyes glanced over them. He studied the words, a basic task of creating a life form using only one parent or no parents at all. He was working it out in his head, wondering if what they even wanted was possible. Wasn’t that just science though? Finding out if the impossible seeming was really possible with their more modern technology.

He supposed he was the one to put that theory to the test, previously creating ‘designer babies’ for those over wealthy demons who wanted their child to look absolutely perfect. It was a pain and came with a high cost, and he still wasn’t comfortable doing such things in high volumes, but he answered his own wonders of could he with the resounding answer of yes. Now there were more studies being made to see if it could be made more publicly available, though he knew that was a no with how much work he put into the few he had made.

As he was reading, a murmuring of a sort was heard. His ears twitching as his slender fingers turned the page to look on the back before the hum of noise became more angry realizing it was being ignored. “Doctor Dragić, please, this is a crucial step for our organization. I’d appreciate it if you'd at least listen to me.”

“Not to offend, sir, but then why would you pick me to represent us.” Of all the people in their collection of researchers and scientists, he was the one with the least cares to expand and bring in money for their lab. He understood the purpose and how important it was, but if he lacked the motivation and drive to bring himself to do a project it just wasn’t a good cause for anyone involved. Yet, here he was, representing their small group as his boss could only cross his arms and stare at him.

“They requested you, who were we to decline them?”

“Smart.” Scoffing at the response, both looked up as the door they had been waiting outside opened, a few men in business suits greeting them.

“We’re sorry about the wait, gentlemen, we ran into some final issues we wanted to discuss in private before bringing you in.”

“It’s understandable.” Taking a step forward, the superior was stopped, a hand motioning for Ladi to enter made.

“We’d prefer if only Doctor Dragić came in, it’s a very private project. The less ears that hear it the better.” Raising an eyebrow, Ladi stood up, more curious on what he was signed up for now.

“Oh, that’s fine...” Ladi could tell the other was nervous, eyeing him as he went past. Giving him that look of you better not fuck this up. Giving a smile he never was one to make any guarantees when he couldn’t promise it himself, waving at the other as he was led into the door and it closed behind him.
