Bitter, controlling, uptight

I 03 - 1 feather
Valtrene came from a poor family, they never really had a chance at being anything until one day when they were very very young the Quinettes decided to take them in, they didn’t know why, only that they had a daughter about the same age they were. They got better education than their parents could afford. They still were likely going to amount to nothing, certainly not going to get a good, well paying job. But it’d be better than if they had just lived the life planned out by society. Also the same age was the prince, who constantly bullied Val, Quinnette was friends with the two of them and often tried to mediate their relationship. In the later years of school Val delivered newspapers. After school, Val got a decentish job working at the castle, the prince only grew more arrogant and always seemed to take his anger out on Val specifically. They grew to resent him and were considering quitting their job for something less noticeable when the prince announced he was leaving the pride to go create his own. And he chose Val as one of the few lions to join him, so they were pulled into an unwanted adventure up the mountainside.

I 04 - 1 feather
Valtrene is one of the lions working on building the castle, it is hard, deadly work but they are only a mere servant in the eyes of the king. Just the pawn, an unnecessary lion to be sacrificed for the smallest needs of the king. They know better that that though and that none of the lions could function in the slightest without them. They do other things too such as being the first one sent down into a dark unexplored cave, or cleaning up whatever messes the lions may make inside. It's constant work, boring work, dangerous work. Who else would carry everybody's stuff, who else would go searching for a mere lost blanket in the midst of a blizzard. And of course who would build the castle, the king was only allowed to bring so many lions and if Val did perish to the colds then the amount of time needed to finish the castle would go up many, many years.

I 05 - 1 feather

Valtrene would just LOVE to take down the king. Or even just leave the pride, they hope that someday they'll outlive Dewarde and at least have some time free from his tyranny, assuming that nobody worse takes his place. They just want to go back to the main pride and live out their life there, but Dewarde was allowed to bring whomever he wanted on this foolish adventure and if Val left now there's no way the REAL king would accept them for abandoning his son. The closest they can get is to close their eyes and imagine a warm breeze, soft green grass. Air that doesn't stab one's lungs just to breathe. But of course now that'll never be real, Dewarde's going to get them all killed and there's nothing they can do about that except dream, it’s not much but it’s all that they’ve got so they cherish it before all hope is completely crushed.

I 06 - 1 feather

This, this life that they're currently living. It's hard to be scared when the worst has already happened to you. Jerkface Dewarde is the king, not just the snotty prince but the king. They have to do whatever he says, no matter how ridiculous, they’ve always been a lower rank than he, but certainly not to such an extent, it's horrendous, they never even had such a thing as a fear of this happening because it's worse than any nightmare they could come up with. They suppose that of course it could be worse, the original pride could be destroyed, their parents could die, the Quinettes could die, there were a million things that could go wrong but that's just life they suppose, it doesn't mean those things are worth worrying about. There is one thing that unreasonably terrifies them though, spiders- with their creepy legs and sticky- disgusting webs choking up your lungs, and of course the fact that they're often deadly poisonous, they of course know that poisonous ones are actually quite rare but that doesn't make the idea any less scary or keep it from filling their mind whenever they see an arachnid.

I 07 - 1 feather

Valtrene Quintoble
Their birth first name was Alinara, just because their parents thought it was a pretty name, but when they were old enough to understand and explain that they're non binary they changed it to Valtrene.
In the pride that their grandmother is from from Valt means "pebble from a river" and ene is "small" Their parents always called them little pebble as a child so that's why they chose that specifically.
Their surname from birth was Aurintoble, aurin coming from aurum which is latin for gold and toble because it rhymes with noble, it is a very fancy name for someone so low in the ranks of the pride.
When the Quinette family took them in, "Quin" was added in place of Aurin as a way to honor and thank the family for such a great deed. Val was not a part of this decision but they think that it's nice.

Their greatest enemy is Dewarde. There's wars going on elsewhere and certainly conflict within the original pride but none of it centers specifically around Val. But the king does, they don't even know why but Dew is always there, any time they're finally not miserable he shows up and ruins it. And the worst part is that they can't even do anything about it. If it weren't treason they'd surely try to fight him, maybe just to get him out of the pride but quite possible that they'd go for the kill, it's not like they haven't thought of a million different ways to destroy him. But they have to sit and do as he says, go freeze indefinitely just because he got in a fight with his parents. If it were up to Val they'd have no enemy, they just want to stay out of conflict and live a nice peaceful life but he just won't leave them alone, and they can't just accept that and convince themself to like him.

Valtrene is used to the constant barrage of insults coming from the king. they just swallow their pride and sigh. There's nothing that they can do about it without getting in trouble but they can't just forget whatever stupid thing he said that time, they create the perfect comeback and although they can never tell him (not like he remembers his own biting words) some of the other lions also hate him and when he's not around they tell the others about what they came up with and they all have a good laugh. Disrespect is one word that could be used to describe their whole life- oh Val, that's the servant right. After all that school, hard work, finally getting an almost decent job just to become "the servant" again, it's humiliating but they suck it up and just think bitter thoughts almost constantly, they hate it, they hate everything about it and would like to just destroy anybody rude to them but they cannot so they do not.

I 14 - 1 feather

Valtrene is smart, above average and although that is incredibly important, if one strength has to be chosen it is their restraint. They could fight the authorities, or speak insulting truths, they could complain or even try to flee, but they know that that would get them nowhere except possibly executed. Even with the knowledge that it would be foolish to fight back it is still incredibly hard to not try to defend oneself from such torture. But they are a master, in the presence of anyone of importance they are always extremely submissive, it's unsettling. They could certainly do some damage and they know this, but they also know that in the end it would not be worth it and there would be great punishment and although it's hard not to say or do anything it is certainly the best for them and quite possibly many other lions, assuming that some of them would likely get involved.

I 15 - 1 feather

They overthink things all of the time, it is hard for them to do stuff without a clear plan. They need to be sure that whatever they want to do will succeed before any attempt at actually doing the thing. When they are told to do something it is easier, as they hardly have to make any decisions at all. but for anything that they are not experienced in doing they freeze. If it is a simple enough task they CAN do that, even though they’ll likely be distressed. but when it comes to doing impulsive stuff they need it to be perfect conditions to actually do it. They also often think about things that they've said or done that they regret, they spend many nights rewriting whole scenes from their life so that things worked out better, not just thinking about it, but rewriting every detail. They also have a need to be in control of things which is practically impossible given their situation, they simply cannot focus if things are out of order or not exactly how they’re supposed to be.

I 16 - 1 feather

Oh if only they could go back to that dreadful day when Dewarde said that he was starting his own pride and they had to come. They'd give anything to go back and stand up for themselves, if only they had said no. It could have resulted in grave injury, but surely Ranchel would have stopped Dewarde from killing them. Or the king could have kicked them out. That's the most likely scenario, if they had gotten kicked out they probably would be thinking back on that day and wishing that they had gone with the prince. But with the knowledge of how that turned out they definitely aren’t glad of the decision they made. They wish that they could leave now; it would have the same result of being prideless but they'd have to live in extremely anti-lion territory all alone until they made it back down to the ground where lions can survive. They'd surely die all alone on the mountain before ever reaching anything resembling safety.

I 17 - 1 feather

If in the presence of authority Valtrene instantly concedes their wrongness, without even so much as explaining why they thought or said the wrong thing, so in their mind everyone assumes that they were just wrong because of stupidity, but it is likely that no one actually cares. To make up for how they must act in those times, when they are in the presence of trustworthy lions they'll try way too hard and completely over explain everything. They refuse to stop until everyone agrees that it was an honest mistake with a perfectly reasonable reason as to why they made it. In different circumstances wouldn't freak out so much about it, as they hate it when other lions do such things, but all of the anger from not being able to point the things out builds up and forcing everyone else to acknowledge it is the only thing that makes them feel better about the royals not being allowed to know. They don't actually mind being wrong in it of itself, but the not getting a chance to defend themself burns them up.

I 18 - 1 feather

In the current situation of their life Valtrene never had any chance to be a path in life other than being a follower. But if this were an alternate universe one where they did become a leader they'd be excellent, they care a lot about being fair to everybody, and know what it's like to work. They're smart and wouldn't lead the pride into danger. But there is no apparent way that they'll ever lead a pride since they aren't related to the king. If in this theoretical alternate universe, if they were born to be the leader, they wouldn't know of the hardships they've faced and could very likely be as terrible as the current king, if not even worse. But in this life, here and now they are in charge of nobody. Also if they were the leader they would try to micromanage everything and even though they'd try their hardest to be just and fair they'd still feel the need to control every little thing, and would likely be disliked by the pride, but it is unknown if this is a result of never getting a chance to control everything so it may depend on if they were born to rule or not

I 19 - 1 feather

They're proud that they've managed to make it as far as they have, not very many lions would be able to survive in the mountain peaks, especially without any help. Even if they are likely to get killed from the harsh climate soon enough. Their whole life they've been constantly forced to do stuff for other lions but still they're alive. They know how to tiptoe around the king so as to not get in trouble. And how to do certain things just the way he likes them to be done. They hate that they're so proud of this, they think it's stupid that someone's accomplishment is that they're alive. And they hate that they're actually proud that they know how to best be a servant better than the others. They think it's sick and yet, here they are- actually proud of such stupid stupid things. They'd never tell this to anyone though and probably just make something up if asked this question.

I 20 - 1 feather

Valtrene thinks that their most valuable trait is the fact that they can survive anything, and that they can do what is necessary to please people, survive harsh conditions. Stare death in the face and come back with 2 more bricks laid down on the foundation of the castle. They can assess the situation and see how best to get through it- well at least they assume that they could do that in any situation; whereas in reality all their life they've only been in situations where pleasing other lions is what gets them through the day. They don't pay this any mind and tell themselves that they can get out of anything. Which assuming the situation is controlled by another lion, then possibly they could be good at talking their way out of it, but afterwards they'd likely owe whoever it is a whole lot of favors, unpleasant favors probably.

I 21 - 1 feather

Honor, anyone hardworking, honorable and decent. They wish everyone would be respectful, and simply decent. if everyone treated each other with respect, maybe lions would actually want to help eachother out. When somebody is kind and pretty much anything other than a jerk, Val always makes sure to respect them too. They won't go out of their way too much for somebody just because they're "nice" because in any slightly reasonable world they'd except that to be the standard, and you can't go out of your way to thank somebody for being average- you could but it's be a lot of work; unless you're a hermit. They love seeing lions thank other lions who do stuff for them, seeing lions properly pay other lions for their services. When somebody helps someone out just to help them it always comes as a shock to Val because nobody helps people just to be helpful, it's crazy; but they aspire to be like that even if they know they're not that kind of lion they still highly look up to the ones that are.

I 22 - 1 feather

Val really looked up to their parents, when they were young their parents were this perfect couple. Hardworking- never ever complaining. They are a core part of the pride, the ones that keep it running from behind the scenes, no snotty Royal could ever amount to as much as their wonderful parents. Their Parents, two lions madly in love with each other, they'd do anything for each other and never saw any faults in their partner, if true love from the storybooks was real, well... it looked like that. They'd do anything for Val, anything at all and no one could stop them if their child was in danger. They were perfection, pure raw perfection and no one could be better than that. Well, as it turns out they actually would do anything for Val, no matter how bad, as they found out at a later point, whilst they still love and look up to them their admiration has dropped and it’ll never be the same again.

I 23 - 1 feather

As young cubs do, Val believed everything that they were told about magic and gods and goddesses. They thought that the sky was sprinkled with lions that were powerful enough to shake the earth, create and destroy life in all but a second. They loved hearing stories and looking up at the night sky and seeing the constellations of their protectors. But as they've grown older they don't believe it's more than fairy tales, the world would be a better place if all of those all powerful people were watching over and guiding it. But it's not- they do believe that there is something, possibly a lion of some sort- they don't think too much about it. Whatever it is that may or may not exist certainly doesn't care about what they do or think, it's all just silly stories to inspire children to do stupid things. Since growing up they've actually heard different versions of the stories where the morals were about worshipping the king- it's all just a tool used to control the masses, made up or changed versions of real stuff to manipulate the minds of the children.

I 24 - 1 feather

They're extremely organized, everything must be clean clean clean. They're often found sorting and resorting stuff and scrubbing down the cave walls. Since moving up the mountain the rooms have been rich with filth, if you can even call them rooms. Valtrene cannot stand the sight of mess and will clean it themselves if the owner of the mess hasn't yet. Everything that they do is neat and tidy and easy to understand. In actions, in decorating and even in speech oftentimes. They are often in the worst messes, sent down to do whatever dirty work the nobles don't want to get involved in, and in places like that they just shut it out of their mind, it is too much to clean. If they don't think about how disgusting the place is then it bothers them less. In times like that they often leave the place a worse mess than they found it, much to the annoyance of the next person there.

I 25 - 1 feather

Their parents, their absolutely perfect parents. They weren't as perfect as Val was led to believe. One day, one of the many letters that they mailed back and forth was sent mistakenly. The mail bird brought it, Val thought that it was odd, not looking like the envelopes that they usually received. Curious, they opened it but what they found inside was not intended for them- it was the wrong letter. This was.... it was they didn't really understand it. It was from Ranchel's father, Mr. Quinette and said that he'd do whatever Val's parents asked so long as they didn't tell anyone. The letter didn't specify what sort of secret blackmail the Aurintobles knew but surely this was why the Quinettes had taken them in. They haven't told anyone yet and don't know if Ranchel knows. They asked their parents what the blackmail was and haven't gotten a response since.

I 26 - 1 feather

When Valtrene is sad they simply refuse to acknowledge it. They don't have time for such trivial emotions. And even if there were time to cry it is unpleasant, who would when to be saddened when you can just repress your emotions. It usually works pretty well, they are very practiced at it. It's been actual years since they last shed a tear for sadness purposes. When they see other lions being sad it just annoys them because to them it is so easy to not be sad. It scares some lions that Val appears to have a lack of emotions, it's not normal but they don't seem to understand that other lions can't just force their emotions to not exist. The sadness of many years gone past all bottled up, one would think would weigh heavy upon their shoulders but it doesn't. Once a month or two has gone by they don't even remember whatever it was that made them sad in the first place, so it lacks any power over them.

I 27 - 1 feather

They always try to bundle their anger up, to push it away like they do so easily when they're sad. But it doesn't come as naturally. They can withhold it for a while but then it all boils up inside of them just waiting for an opening. And then the only lions that they trust enough to open up to end up on the end of their unbridled rage. They should have learned by now that it is best to let it out in small doses but they do not listen to that logic because in their mind it seems so much better to just avoid it as long as possible. They have lost multiple friends by taking out their wrath on said friends. They do not mind though, if facing the worst insults and loudest screaming a lion could ever make is enough to drive them away then Val supposes that they rather have a better friend who can endure it.

I 28 - 1 feather

Val is fairly intelligent, they never struggled in school. And mind you this was a very fancy school not just one of those middle class average schools. They sat nestled right above the average for this school. They're not some sort of a genius but they can understand and act upon simple concepts. They have a quick wit, especially when it comes to creating comebacks and piercing retorts, and they can figure stuff out easily enough, but they always double, and triple check so that it would end up taking the same amount of time for a less quick lion to figure it out. They like to think that they're smarter than most of the other lions. And they are in many ways, although they're not valued for this in the least. So it doesn't matter too much they suppose, if all they are is a body for heavy lifting and servant work, they think that their intelligence is wasted, but oh well, there’s nothing they can do about it. They are not as well versed in emotional intelligence, seeing how they are always trying to feel as little emotion as possible. They are good at understanding what it is that is wanted of them, and they are centered around logical decisions the most.

I 29 - 1 feather

Val doesn't like change. They set up their routine to what they consider ideal in a bad situation, when things change it causes them great stress and anxieties. They don't like it when routine is broken. If there was general change for the better then they could tolerate it, and if it actually helped improve things they'd certainly like the idea, it would be worth the stress. But things hardly ever change for the better, when they imagine the word change they just imagine how much worse things could be. Or even if it’s not worse or better, it would still ruin their routine. They are good at learning new things but it causes them stress when they are not practiced in it. The last major change completely uprooted and ruined their whole entire life. And even if it hadn't been such a horrible new life the drastic differences may very well have destroyed them.

I 30 - 1 feather

Valtrene cannot be honest in front of dewarde but there is one thing that they will pour their heart and soul into. The one thing that they fill with truth and honesty. Writing letters back home to their parents. They love putting all of their feelings and emotions down on paper and sending it home. To vent, ask questions, and simply keep in contact with their family. They are so used to hiding their feelings that just being able to write everything that they could ever imagine is the highlight of their day. They have started writing just for pure enjoyment too instead of just to communicate with other lions. They don't do it very often for fear of getting caught but sometimes they write poetry, most lions would call it nonsense but to them it is practically the only light in such a dark world of despair. If they didn't have writing they're not sure anything would keep them sane.
