Character Bio

Saul was born in the capital of the Empire of Stozhary, Khinovo. They were the firstborn of their family, born during a bitter winter storm. Their childhood was unhappy; their parents blamed them for their own unhappy marriage, and were verbally and emotionally abusive towards them and their younger sisters, with the occasional outburst of physical abuse just to cement the trauma nice and deep.

Saul at first tried their best to be the model child in an attempt to earn their love; they got nothing but high marks in school, played the organ at services at their synagogue, and even became a valued member of their school’s baseball team. It was never enough for their parents, and Saul grew steadily more resentful of their family. They fought often with their sister Yael, who rebelled against their parents however she could and was embarrassed by what she saw as her sibling’s weakness. The only family member they got along with was Rivka, their baby sister; both Saul and Yael were willing to put their differences aside in order to protect her from the worst of their parents.

But Saul's affection for her wasn't enough to make up for their anger at their family and circumstances; their gentle, eager-to-please personality (along with their prominent birthmarks) made them a target of bullies throughout their time at school. Their childhood was miserable.

By the time they were 16 and were ready to begin their three years of mandatory military service in the Imperial Armed Forces, they were ready to cut ties with their family altogether. The day the got their letter calling them to report for the start of their training, they stood up to their parents for the first time, screaming that they were never a girl and were done with putting up with everyone's shit, and stormed off into the night. Their family never saw them again. While their parents saw it as yet more evidence of their firstborn being a failure, Yael and Rivka missed them.

Saul enjoyed their time in training, discovering a talent for sniping and having the patience for the enemy to reveal themselves. Their superior quickly noticed their hunger for the praise and affirmation they'd never received at home, and used it to ensure their loyalty. For the first time, Saul felt like they had value, and while they were rather reserved they made several friends among other draftees. They weren't treated any worse than the others there, and were even somewhat respected for their skill with a rifle. This was when they first began to introduce themself as "Sibiryakov" rather than the feminine form, "Sibiryakova", and when they began to consider choosing Saul as their name. In what little spare time they had they helped out the medics; they planned to become a doctor after they left the army, and enjoyed learning how to help their injured comrades. Those first first few years of training were some of the happiest in their life.

It quickly went downhill; war broke out between the Empire of Stozhary and its neighbor over a territory dispute. At first Saul fought as a sniper and was comparatively safe, but the lack of doctors on the front quickly became dire, and Saul was instead reassigned as a field medic. They weren't a doctor, but they knew enough to help keep people alive until they got them to one. Saul's time in the war was extremely traumatic, both as a sniper and as a medic. As a sniper, they were ordered to shoot both active enemy combatants and injured and surrendering ones; they always obeyed, fearing being killed themself as a traitor if they didn't. As a medic they saw people die inches away from them, often while giving them what first aid they could. They slept in the trenches, in fear of starvation and being attacked during the night, and were sometimes attacked by enemy fighters while giving first aid.

After the war, they were too traumatized from their experiences as a field medic to pursue their former dream of becoming a doctor. They decided to join the military police force of the capital city, feeling that the only thing that gave them worth was their ability to fight. They proved adaptable in transferring their skills, and worked their way up to the rank of detective, being partnered with the a more experienced soldier, Birds. Saul eventually killed Birds after suspecting (with good reason, though they never found out if they were right or not) that he was the serial killer whose victims they kept discovering. After Birds' death the killings stopped, and Saul was never formally charged due to a lack of evidence. They instead requested a transfer to another city, which was granted.

The city they transferred to was near the Empire's northern border, a large coastal city named Solnersk. Colonel Fairlie, leader of the city's armed forces, saw a lot of potential in them, and had them assigned to Special Forces in order to be able to keep a closer eye on them; he was their mentor of sorts and viewed them almost as a surrogate child. Saul proved themself to a hardworking and conscientious person, though they opened up to very few. Of those few was their partner, Einion Westbrook, a bad-tempered man who specialized in undercover work. Despite a rocky start the two grew very close, nearly inseparable, even as Saul climbed the ranks and eventually outranked Westbrook. They were appointed Lieutenant Colonel, Fairlie's right hand; when he disappeared at the end of the city's gang war, Saul became the de facto one in command, and has remained so despite never receiving a formal promotion.

They insist they aren't bitter at all about any this.

Personality

Saul is a skilled liar and manipulator, keeping their thoughts secret to all but a few. They prefer to project an unworried, warm demeanor even when furious, as they feel that expressing negative emotions would be a slippery slope to hurting people; this tends to creep out other people once they're around them enough, as no one can truly be that cheerful. They lie extremely often, mostly about themself, and have a very dark sense of humor.

Saul has extremely low self-esteem, perceiving any mistakes as evidence of their own worthlessness and any negative emotions they feel as proof that they're a bad person. They base their self-worth on external things like compliments and achievements, but are quick to dismiss praise when they're in a funk as they feel unworthy of it. They open up to very few, as they fear abandonment if people got to know them as they truly are, and are extremely loyal to those few that they do open up to. Conversely, they then take perceived betrayal from those people extremely hard.

They are a pragmatist and a utilitarian; while they want to help people and make the world a better place, they believe that the ends justify the means and that even horrible acts are worth it if they have a good enough outcome. They don't enjoy hurting or killing others, but it doesn't disturb them either: they see it as simply a thing that must be done, and as not worth thinking about afterwords. They are extremely calm even in high-stress situations or even active combat, which can disturb the people around them. They are a rather cynical person, which surprises those who are used to their cheerful facade.
