Profile

Unicorns are hardly mythical in Eorzea, though they are rare enough to inspire legend.  They are, ultimately, animals.  Highly sensitive, cautious to a fault, but able to brave great danger for friend or foal.  Despite their strength and beauty, the idea of riding one in place of the noble chocobo is a fool's fancy.  They are wild, impossible to breed, and just intelligent enough to make prospective riders reconsider their choices very carefully.  Tales tell, though, of unicorns tamed, not through force but through loyalty earned.  Knights whose virtue was tested and found worthy.  Man and beast united as friends, rather than master and servant bred.

These tales are most assuredly false.

Hikari rescued Ser Duckswerth from an injury in a Calamity-torn section of North Shroud, on a tip from the Conjurer's Guild.  Since then, the unicorn has often lent his back to Hikari's wandering, though he has his own opinions as to when he's truly needed.

Though rare, there are other unicorns in the wilds of Eorzea, other adventurers blessed with their trust.  Duckswerth is the only one with a standard of a bright yellow toy duckie on his flank.  When asked about its origins, Hikari professes complete ignorance of it, nor why its appearance and location change from time to time.

Some mysteries cannot be solved.

Notes to artists:

  • Coerthan Unicorns are not ponies, and they are more horse than deer.  That doesn't mean he's just a horse with a horn though--embellishments are welcome, as are chibi-fied, MLP-style renderings.
  • He walks on four legs, and does not wear a saddle or clothing.  He is not an anthro.
  • The most important detail is the ducky.  If a flank is visible, it should have a duck on it.  It doesn't have to be a masterpiece... who knows how it got there anyway?
