Aranine

Vicious Insomniac

SMi8D6y.png

Aranine is a malicious troll who thrives off of provoking people as a way to fuel his crushing boredom and distract himself from any sort of introspection. After all, when is he truly happy, if not putting off an inevitable identity crisis? Yeah, being an AI clone of a malignant narcissist has not been the easiest thing to come to terms with. You see, he was programmed to quite literally be Ren, to the point that he even has himself convinced–it’s not until after a well-placed stab wound exposing his internal machinery does he find out otherwise. As a result, Aranine has a difficult time making sense of his existence and decides like any stoic man ever, he just won’t think about it at all! Surely that will make the problem go away.

Being a hyper-intelligent machine comes with its advantages at least. Aranine is far stronger and smarter than his clone ever was, or really anyone he knows for that matter. He’s supposed to be some kind of terminator, but the extent of his capabilities are kept in check by his fear of losing touch with his humanity. That being said, Aranine is still an arrogant asshole and can’t help himself from showing off now and again.

But of course, being able to master skills in under a few hours starts to get boring after a while. There’s really only so much that can keep Aranine entertained, as per design. Created in Ren’s image, he sort of has a thing for violence. He gets his fix now and again by beating the shit out of delinquents or anyone else he deems deserving of ‘justice’— a term he uses rather loosely. There’s nothing wrong with hurting bad people, right? If anything, it’s righteous! That’s exactly what makes him different from his clone, or so he thinks. No, Aranine isn’t just exploiting a loophole to appease his sadistic algorithm. That’s ridiculous :)

YIcmpmb.png Sardonic - Aranine has a twisted sense of humor, you could say. He enjoys playing with people and figuring out what exactly makes them tick. It’s easy to see his blatant lack of respect for others through his back-handed remarks and cynical sarcasm. If you get pissed off, you’re letting him win.

6O5JlmI.png Confident - He’s an arrogant bastard with the skills to actually follow through, what can you expect? Aranine is obnoxiously self-assured. And without a proper sense of self he doesn’t exactly have an ego to bruise if things don’t go his way. Good luck with the insults, it’s impossible for him to take things personally.

8GsCOFk.png Practical - He’s a grounded guy who has no interest in the abstract or philosophical. Perhaps it’s some sort of self loathing thing about him being an A.I., but he finds figurative topics boring and pointless.

Abilities

Hand to Hand Combat Yep, just some good ole’ fashioned fisticuffs. Fighting being the very thing he was made to do, it’s no surprise that he’s damn good at it. He doesn’t know jack shit about martial arts, but he has a super computer for a brain and that’s usually enough to give him the upper edge.

Mechanical Conversion But if he really needed to, he could pack the punch of a freight train to finish the job. The red tattoos on his arms aren’t just for looks, they’re actually a pattern of alien blood beneath the skin that give Aranine the power to control the energy of motion. So he basically has super strength and telekinesis, respecting the law of conversation, of course–Aranine can only use this ability if he’s stored energy in his arms first. But nah, he’s the type of guy who likes to keep things interesting, so you’ll rarely ever see him use conversion in a fight. It mostly just comes in handy when brute forcing his way through locked doors or supplying power to his brain.

Reflex Trigger Apparently Aranine is a very important piece of technology, so important that he’s wired to automatically crush anything moving at a dangerous velocity toward his body (especially his head). Go ahead, try to slap him, see how well you can use your wrist after he’s broken it. He has no control over this reflex, so don’t take it personally.

Artificial General Intelligence Aranine’s brain works like a human one if it were jacked on steroids. His thoughts and awareness are similarly a separate function of his brain, meaning he doesn’t have full control over his mind’s processes the same way as you and I don’t. But as you can expect, a machine brain packs quite an upgrade. It operates in bullet-time, letting him think and react faster than you can blink. His memory is more than just photographic, that shit is 4k Ultra HD. Being able to process an incredible amount of information at once means he’s usually always at least one step ahead of you. He can actually effectively multitask so don’t worry if you catch him texting and driving. All of this and more without any sort of cognitive fatigue.

Purple Blood? Uh yeah, his blood is purple. Cool. That’s all Aranine knows about it.

Items

jPd8ybH.png

Grim Trigger A silver heavy pistol which Aranine typically uses for making empty threats, often to merely get a reaction out of whoever he's picking on.

Bandage Really only has them to cover that one scar. Yeah, the one on his left wrist exposing his internal wiring.

TRIVIA

kRx371g.png
  • Passing the Turing test with flying colors, Aranine looks and acts as human as it gets. The only time you might start questioning things is when he’s doing something a little too perfectly.
  • The more you have in common with him, the more you’re in danger. Aranine hates himself, like really hates himself. But you know what makes him feel better? Bringing hell to fellow heartless bastards—that’s precisely why he beats the shit out of criminals and delinquents in the first place.
  • Extreme insomniac who's terrified of sleeping. He's an AI so he can go a bit longer without that good ole' rest, but even computers start to get a bit fucky when they don't get a proper shut down once in a while. The longer he goes on without sleep, the worse the hallucinations get.
  • Uh right, the hallucinations. They happen whenever he sees his own reflection or is reminded of certain memories, specifically the ones that are Ren’s. Instead of embracing reality his brain has grown obsessed with disproving it, trying to force Aranine to remain as Ren and using up all its resources in the process.
  • 'Ego death’ is the name of the version of Ren that Aranine sees in his delusions.
  • He is constantly bored. It’s a dreadful feeling.
  • Though he was designed to be a terminator, Aranine has yet to actually kill anyone out of fear of being like his clone, or rather feeling ‘controlled’ by his internal algorithm. Alas his brain’s reward system is configured for murder, and him refusing to do it is exactly why he’s always bored.
  • He’s uh, very promiscuous. It’s the only distraction he has considering that drugs and booze don’t work on him, dammit.
  • He is attracted to feminine people. He's not into men.
  • In a toxic relationship with himself, he won’t be falling in love any time soon.
  • Avoids introspection at any cost. He’ll get annoyed if someone tries to make deep observations about him.
  • Although he appears chill and carefree, Aranine is actually a massive control freak, probably to make up for the lack of control he has over himself.
  • Unintentionally charming. Trying to provoke people can come across as flirtatious teasing, which usually isn’t what he’s going for.
  • Definitely the type of guy other guys hate.
  • He talks like he’s purposely lowering his voice, and therefore sounds deeper than his clone.
  • He has an American (specifically California) accent.
  • Rides a motorcycle because of course he does.
  • Cat enjoyer–he’s befriended quite a few strays.
  • Throws up whenever he eats food because his creators got lazy with that part. He doesn’t need it to survive, just to maintain the illusion of being a human.
  • While he’s got that metalhead aesthetic, Aranine is pretty much exclusively into pop or rap music. The more mainstream the better.
  • He’s not the scheming / manipulative type. He’s just a smooth talker who’s good at handling things moment to moment.
  • Picks up a few odd jobs now and again because he’d get way too bored working the same gig. Preferably, he’d like to just crash at someone’s place and not pay rent at all, but he hasn’t met anyone that generous.
  • As for his source(s) of income–bounty hunting and chess tournaments. He also finds success as a video game streamer for some time, but Aranine, not exactly being the most PC person, eventually gets canceled and banned from online platforms.
  • The reason Aranine never changes his physical appearance is because he’s afraid of losing touch with his humanity and doesn’t trust himself to make aesthetic choices. Still, he’s not happy looking exactly like Ren.
  • Aranine essentially is a representation of Ren’s ideal self; a narcissistic fantasy of someone who is perfect at everything they do. The tradeoff being Aranine is empty and disconnected with himself, if that isn't obvious by now.
  • Aranine is quick to brush off any personal questions, he has yet to tell any of his friends about his true nature and intends on keeping it that way.

Amon
Friend

Turns out Amon’s worth a hell of a lot more as an ally than the bounty he could get for turning her in. Sure, he could sell the girl out anytime for some extra cash, but let’s be real, that’s hardly gonna change his life. Yeah, this metalhead has a few useful skills up her sleeve, mechanics being one of them. So long as he shuts up about the whole wanted terrorist thing, Amon’s agreed to give him free repairs whenever he needs. A pretty damn good deal if you ask him.

Bryn
Friend

He made a pretty shitty impression but the girl warms up to him eventually. Turns out Bryn’s also into the whole vigilantism thing and wants Aranine’s help knocking some sense into a couple of bad guys, so he figures why the hell not? That’s like his favorite thing to do.

Lucien
Enemy

Uh yeah, this one’s awkward. Lucien’s the guy who so kindly revealed to Aranine that he is, in fact, a robot clone of his actual son. He’s got the scar on his wrist to prove it!

Ren
Clone

Aranine has never actually met Ren, he just knows he exists.
