minor demon who appears as a bipedal knot of worms. They work as an infernal majordomo (butler) in service to greater demons. They are very good at what they do, setting to each task with an uncanny poise and skill. Unbeknownst to most, Janus serves the house itself - only nominally beholden to whosoever takes residence therein, and in fact more than happy to... evict a tenant, should they feel the house wills it so.

Setting

the house

In a far flung corner of the underworld, there lies a grand mansion on overgrown grounds. Somewhat stereotypical looking: gloomy, creepy, opulent, old... On the exterior, intricate Victorian detailing adorns its dark walls, its windows peer down at the wild lawn, and its gables and spires stretch into the gloomy sky.

Compared to the outer façade, the interior seems larger than it should be, but it matches well -- dark wood, dark paint, the scent of old paper and velvet drapery heavy on the air. Notably free of dust thanks to Janus' dutiful work.

The House may be haunted, or perhaps even alive - to an outside observer the signs of its supposed sentience are subtle and vague: is it just a trick of the firelight, or is that portrait on the wall really following your every move around the room?

Whatever its nature, Janus considers themselves loyal to the House first and foremost. They will follow 'orders' it gives, and they remain even as other residents come and go.
