What kinds of kids end up in gangs? Those with bad family lives, and those with no family lives.
Riza was just a street-rat, begging for scraps, until the gang called Shade recruited her. Everyone of them knew what it was like to need help, so they helped each other. She had food, medicine, clothing, shelter, and people to watch her back. That was all she ever needed. I’m exchange she did whatever they needed her to do. And that turned out to be catching pokemon. The strongest, the rarest, the best.
At first she didn’t care about the pokemon. But her first pokemon was a Rookidee and when she learned what it would evolve into, a switch flipped in her brain. Someday, she would be able to fly on it. High and far and fast. She became obsessed with training it. And along the way she caught a few others that moved her in some way. And she learned to be charmed by the cuteness of all kinds of pokemon too. It all started with Raven, that Rookidee.
But then she met a group of innocent trainers while out hunting and her gang ran off and left her. She didn’t like that so she stuck around and got curious about the trainers. Then she started to hear about Shade from the perspective of the outside world. She learned that pokemon were being abused to become stronger. Pokemon that she herself had caught for them. She was shocked, appalled, and confused. She didn’t know what to do, but she couldn’t go back right away.
Then she found herself in the same place as one of the gang leader’s sons. He was the one spreading the news about Shade. He told her their methods made the pokemon become huge and they would rampage out of their pain, leaving only one way to put them out of their misery. Riza was still loyal to the gang so it was hard to trust her ears, but part of her believed it. Still, she hadn’t decided what to do… Until his mom showed up and—seeing them together—renounced them both.
So Riza turned to the light side. But brought a lot of shady tactics with her. Once a rogue, always a rogue.
