Summary

Rasiel was foolish and reckless when he was a teenager. At 14 years old he thought it would be funny to break into a neighbor's house and steal things such as food and articles of clothing, since they always left a window open at night and he thought he could get away with it. He did so every day for almost a month, until he was finally caught. The neighbors called the authorities to take him to court and just wanted to make Rasiel to pay for the food, but the court saw it as an act of Avarizia and he was sentenced to 7 years in Purgatory.

When Ras first got there he was defiant. His adolescent hormones were raging and he constantly yelled about not deserving to be there. But as the days wore on he began to think that maybe it wasn't just about the theft. The more he thought about it, the more he felt that he was inherently a bad person and stealing from his neighbor was just the first sign of his true self being revealed. Avarizia and the other Seven Major Crimes are referred to as the Seven Deadly Sins by most really old angels. In their day any sign of those in a person made them immoral and unfit to live among the others, and they would Fall, which means they would be exiled and "sent to suffer for eternity in the mysterious dark world" that exists below Purgatory. This haunted Rasiel's mind for a long time and he became convinced that he was plagued and he could never be pure again because he had sinned.

After serving his sentence Rasiel emerged a different person. He was no longer the plucky young boy he had been when he was sentenced. His 7 years underground made him bitter and resentful, mostly toward himself. To add to it, his parents(whom he had lived with) had packed up and left Haven while he was gone. However his best friend Caelem was there to see him return to the overworld and took him in. They now live in Caelem's townhouse outside Haven City, where Rasiel basically lives off Caelem while he tries to figure himself out.
