Mournstar is a cat haunted by regret, but possessing the heart to do great things and protect those close to him. While he feels a great deal of remorse for his failures and the loss of the cats who looked up to him-whether it was his fault or not; he will do everything in his power to carry on their legacy and try and rebuild their fallen clan from the ashes to protect those cats that still look to him for guidance. His self-loathing leads to him being snappy and often unapproachable, but you can always rely on him to be there when you need him and to stand by your side no matter the fight.

He doesn't really like to be involved in things, preferring to keep to himself and watch from afar, because truthfully he doesn't feel as if he deserves as such and sees himself as an unwanted protector- who's duty is to defend and his own personal desires fall by the wayside as a result of that.

When he is in a particular good mood or receives good news for once...you can see glimpses of the cat he used to be. Confident, approachable, earnest, and excited to do his job and push his clan forward. But inevitably, his memories still linger in the back of his mind and it never really lasts. 

Vinekit was born a member of Magmaclan. Growing up among his clanmates with aspirations of making the clan better for everyone and protecting the family he valued most. He excelled at fighting and hunting, and sped through being an apprentice and warrior without losing his spark for the warrior lifestyle and loyalty to starclan's wishes. It was only natural that his dedication would lead him to be nominated Deputy and then Leader, once the previous leader Sootstar passed away. He led his clan adoringly in their jungle home until an unexpected peril arrived. A leopard- a massive cat that the warriors knew only in their legends, appeared. Attacking the clan, and killing most of the cats within in. Vinestar did everything in his power to save his clanmates and protect them, but no matter what he did- the leopard was far too strong, too fast, too cunning for any of the smaller felines it had chosen to attack. Vinestar was forced to flee with the only cats that could get away. The entire clan was ripped from the map and his life, and he lost six of his nine lives to go with them. 

The only remnants of his clan were himself, his medicine cat Stoneleaf, and two young kits that Stoneleaf was able to pull from the chaos- Umberkit and Duskkit. All four traumatized, they set about getting as far away from that place as possible. With no home, no idea where to go, and suffering immense pain, Vinestar led the scraps of clan he still had left to try and find somewhere to hold onto the small hopes he still had- the two kits that were terrified and weakened by the incident. With a determination to keep them alive, to keep their way of life and their history alive- Vinestar changed his own name to Mournstar to honor the fallen clan he'd failed to save, and tried to begin the long road to rebuild. 

Their new home was closer to the twolegs than he wanted, not realizing at the time that this could perhaps be the light that would save them all.
