About

A foreigner from North America, Charlotte arrived in Japan at 13 years old purely by misfortune.

During one of her bouts of mischief, Charlie finds herself lost on a cargo ship far from land. By the time the crew finds their stowaway, they are unable to turn back.

A freak storm blows the ship far off it's course, before an underwater demon mistakenly attacks the ship- a mistake only because she is unaware that the cargo belongs to Muzan.

This attack leaves Charlotte as one of two survivors floating on the wreckage as the sun had begun to shine through the waters. The crew member, exhausted, eventually slips into the sea, leaving Charlotte entirely alone.

Personality

Childish Loyal Lonely Honorable Sweet Forgiving

Charlotte Ainsley-Kanda is often described as 'stubborn', 'snarky', and 'a bit of a brat, but with a heart of gold'. She is quick to fogive, and rarely means ill towards anyone.

Will say out-of-pocket or offensive things just because it's funny.

Relies on her heart, except in battle where she is creative and thinks quickly.

Charlie has a strong sense of honor instilled in her by Akihiko. She’s a guardian at heart, and won’t ever hesitate to help someone in need, even if they've wronged her.

Despite growing to have many friends, Charlie struggles to fit in with Japanese society outside the Corps and feels outcast often. Therefore, she tends to be quite lonely, and holds her friends close.

Charlotte has no experience in the romance department at all. She looks quite different than Japan's standard of beauty, and was often treated lesser due to it. Akihiko even forced her to scrub herself raw at one point because he thought she was just dirty. Due to this, she has a lot of self-confidence issues regarding her appearance, and she shys away from any affection meant to be more than a friendly touch.

Unlike many other Demon Slayers, Charlie refuses to harm any yokai who is unaggressive. If they don't hurt people, then she won't harm them and is in fact actively friendly with a handful. Oni however, who are always under the influence of and loyal to Muzan, are fair game.

Trivia

  • Charlie was assigned Kanoto rank shortly after her acceptance into the corps, along with special permission to skip Final Selection due to her circumstances, as she had proven her ability to survive and had slain several demons already. This, however, means that some slayers in the corps don’t consider Charlie a true member…
  • She hates natto, so Akihiko forces her to eat it as a punishment
  • Charlie’s crow assigned himself to her by immediately landing on her head after Giyu and Charlie’s sparring.
  • Has a large burn scar covering her back from when she was starting to learn how to cloak herself in flame. It was a valuable lesson, and one she wears without shame.
  • Her physical flexibility rivals Inosuke’s
  • Charlie still has a lot of resentment towards her mother’s infidelity, and anyone who she knows to be cheating on their partner
  • Because she has low physical self esteem, she’s easily attached to anyone who genuinely compliments her appearance
  • Giyu gifted her blue hair pins a year after they met, and she always wears them or keeps them with her. Also keeps several gifts from her friends on her (earrings from Tengen, a good luck charm from Mitsuri)
  • Tends to openly state her emotions, as a habit from when Akihiko first began teaching her to speak Japanese- when she’s overwhelmed with positive feelings, she sometimes forgets the correct words, so she’ll shorten it to “happy!” with a big smile.
  • Knows Japanese much more fluently than English now, but she cannot read well in either language.
  • Collects trophies from demons she slays, as a memorial more than anything else. Akihiko thinks this habit is barbaric and frequently chides her for it.

Biography and Noteable Plots (generalized)

Shortly after surviving the shipwreck that left her stranded, Charlie is attacked yet again by another yokai whilst on the coast of the mainland. She is saved by Akihiko Kanda, the demon who eats demons.

While she initially was very frightened by him, and even raised a makeshift weapon in defense, she quickly came to like the man.

Akihiko takes young Charlie under his wing, stating that “if she is going to do stupid things, she may as well know how to defend herself properly.” This set her on the path of becoming a strong warrior, though she used two makeshift spears.

She eventually comes to befriend two yokai who further her abilities- a kappa under the command of Akihiko, who teaches her how to slip around land as easily as in water, and an old Inugami who imparts various knowledge and wisdoms to her.

Several years in the future, but before the canon storyline, Akihiko and Charlie are found by members of the Demon Slayer Corp. Akihiko flees, unwilling to kill humans again, and he leaves Charlie in their care.

Charlie is brought, against her will, to the Butterfly Mansion where she is interrogated as a potential spy for Muzan. She fights ferally to attempt an escape, but is ultimately captured again.

Sanemi, who wants to simply kill her, is stopped by Giyu, who offers Charlie a choice: spar with him, and if Charlie wins then she can go. If Giyu wins, then Charlie must join the corps.

After a fierce battle, where Charlie’s initial skill is clear, she is defeated by the Water Hashira, who then helps her to her feet (both earning her respect and friendship).

Part 1

After returning successfully from several test missions, Charlie finds herself roped into a small town's problem of disappearing children. Despite facing scrutiny from the locals, she is able to track down an elder man claiming that ghosts kidnapped the kids, and has now stolen his grandson even though the village claims that the man is responsible for it all.

Charlie battles a 3-tailed fox yokai to save the grandson of a rising druglord.

Charlie faces bullying from a group fellow slayers who both do not trust foreigners, and believe her to be a spy for Muzan despite being proven innocent. These slayers are also bitter that Charlie was allowed to skip Final Selection. When it becomes physical, she is forced to defend herself.

After investigating rumors of a powerful demon, Charlie comes upon the charred ruins of several villages and follows the trail to a massive lump of shiny stone.

While healing from Yamatabera's assault, Charlie meets and is attacked by Upper Moon 4's joyful clone, Urogi. She then finds herself trapped on a roof with him as a freak tsunami wreaks havoc. It is here that their relationship is seeded.

Charlie recieves several gifts from the druglord whose grandson she saved, and who now welcomes her with open arms whenever necessary and bestows a handwoven silk haori upon her that depicts the girl's battle with the ferocious fox yokai.

Charlie finds herself on another mission, this time to clear the name of her friend who has been accused of murder. At the same time, rumors of a shapeshifting oni surface.

Charlotte meets Akihiko again, and after short reunion they both join the battle against Akaza, ultimately saving Rengoku Kyojuro's life.

Part 2

Rengoku defends Akihiko, and the demon gifts Charlie his old family estate. Charlie learns more of Akihiko's past from his brother, who works at the Butterfly Mansion as a cleaner.

Charlie finds Urogi poking about in her home as she arrives back from finishing her mission to destroy the shapeshifting oni that had resurfaced and taken Rengoku's appearance.

Charlotte approaches Ubuyashiki and the Hashira with an insane proposal- to allow Urogi to partially reside at her estate, becoming closer to him to squirrel out information on Upper Moon 4 in an attempt to save as many people as possible from needlessly battling such a powerful demon.

[End of Finalized sections. All further subject to change]

While amusing Urogi, Charlie meets Karaku who proceeds to battle her.

Charlie is sent on a mission to dispatch a belligerent, highly aggressive oni known as 'Raigira', who seems to favor devouring children. The mission is considered a failure as the oni escapes, and uses his electric attacks to blast Charlie off the side of a cliff.

Urogi continues to flirt with Charlie, in his own way, despite her awkwardness and attempts to ignore his advances. Charlie focuses on recovering from Raigira's attacks, vowing to destroy the demon. Urogi offers to teach her how to resist electricity, to Charlie's confusion.

Charlie goes after Raigira once more, and then arrives home to find Urogi eating her cannabis powder, rendering her unable to keep herself from nightmares after the last of it leaves her body. She shouts at him, truly upset with the demon for the first time, and he leaves.

Another long Mission, this time to destroy an oni that travels underground and impales its victims on the large horns it sports. She is also sent to investigate disappearances in another village, finding that the culprit is an oni who uses belladona as poison to kill its victims.

Urogi arrives at the estate once more, sheepishly asking if Charlie is still angry. They make up. When Charlie is startled awake from a nightmare, terrified, anxious, and oddly fearful of Urogi, the demon lays himself over her like a blanket to make sure she stays safe. Upon awakening once more, Charlie is forced to confront and finally accept her own feelings for the demon.

Charlie and Urogi kiss for the first time.

Charlie and Urogi's relationship continues to grow closer.

[End of unfinalized section, all further is certain]

Charlotte and Akihiko are sent on a mission several miles from the hidden Swordsmith village to dispatch multiple yokai in the area. Upon arrival, they find that that they've been given false information. A single demon awaits them in ambush, wielding a vial of Muzan's blood. After a short vocal spat, the demon is able to inject this blood into Akihiko, driving him mad and allowing Muzan to control him once more. Charlotte and her father are forced to battle against their wills. Meanwhile, the assault on the Swordsmith Village has begun.

Akihiko Kanda is killed, and dies believing he murdered his child once more. Hantengu is also destroyed. Charlie awakes on a hospital bed at the Butterfly Mansion, her spirit broken by her recent losses.

Charlie takes time off of missions to grieve, as her emotions become unpredictable and volatile.

Charlotte follows the directions left to her by Akihiko, up the haunted mountain that terrified her as a child to find the Kanda clan's guardian dragon and recieve its blessing.

Obanai interrogates Charlie about her true relationship with Urogi, and secrets come to light that change the course of her furture.

Charlie is privately ordered to flee, to survive in secret, and to remain available should the Corps have need of her. Both a blessing, and an awful punishment. Before leaving, Ubuyashiki gifts Charlie the Demon Core that had belonged to Akihiko. After escaping her friends' attempts to take her down, she finds herself at the edge of a cliff, overlooking the rising dawn. Free. Alive. Dishonored. Alone. Thus ends 'WaveSong', and begins 'This World We Live In'.

  • Charlie has freckles everywhere! They are not 'aesthetically placed'. They are part of who she is and are not optional to draw! Please do NOT just draw a couple dots over the bridge of her nose- I will ask you to revise!
  • She has massive burn scars on her shoulders. These are not optional to draw. Feel free to look at the other images in her gallery if you need help.
  • Usually has a lit sprig of wisteria incense hanging from her mouth. Optional unless requested!
  • She has two hairpins and also several gold earrings on one ear. The hairpins are simple, blue, with lighter blue gems that travel up them. NOT optional.

Breath Style: Oil Breathing, (and additional Abilities)

Charlotte Ainsley is the progenitor of this breath style, having seen and failed to replicate flame breathing due to lack of training. It is a dance filled with movement and power. It requires a lithe, flexible user to reach its full potential.

Oil breathing was originally mistaken as an offset of Water Breathing, before being quickly discovered as a derivitive of flame.

Because of its often fluid movement, users of Oil Breathing can largely benefit from learning swordsmanship from those who practice Water Breathing.

Charlie also is adept with a slingshot and will use it to fling wisteria-filled smoke bombs across the battlefield.

First Form: Drop Dance

[Water] | [effect] | [Strength ★★]

Translucent, iridescent oil drops from the tip of the user's weapon like water. The liquid is extremely slippery, like soap, and can be used to slide and dance around the battlefield. Though not too dangerous by itself, it can be used to trick opponents onto it, making it difficult for most enemies to react and balance.

This oil floats on water.

Second Form: Ignition

[-] | [effect] | [Strength ★★★ ]

Primarily a defensive move. Uses both weapons to spin and strike them together up and out, simultaneously scattering sparks across the field and guarding from attacks. These sparks will ignite the oil previously spread by its user.

Alternatively, the oil can be ignited with sparks from another source- flint, for example.

Third Form: Bubble Beat

[Flame, Water] | [Explosive, Poison] | [Strength ★★★(★)]

User shoots a stream of oily, explosive bubbles from their weapon. Bubbles vary in size and speed by will.

Charlotte Ainsley-Kanda can infuse these bubbles with smoke from her wisteria incense, creating a minefield of explosive toxin that are powerful enough to deal with low-level demons.

Can be used with two weapons.

Fourth Form: Dragon Blast

[Flame] | [Explosive] | [Strength ★★★★]

The ordinarily thin liquid begins to thicken into a burning hot sludge, though there is no flame yet. Very difficult to remove from the body. Eventually erupts into an explosion.

Best used with two weapons, and requires much more strength to swing a blade.

This sludge sinks in water, and can still be explosive when submerged entirely.

Charlie has learned how to use the force of the blasts to her advantage when moving around the battlefield.

Fifth Form: Limit Break- Combusting Haymaker

[Flame] | [Explosive] | [Strength ★★★★★]

A last resort move brought by desperation.

The user stabs the blade of their weapon into the ground, forcing hot oil through porous surfaces and superheating the earth. This also ignites the oil in a random flurry of fiery eruptions at the user's will.

Thick oil also burst from the tip of the weapon during each hit, coating the enemy and erupting after several seconds.

Extremely effective in situations where an enemy can be cornered.

Additional Abilities

Due to Charlie's upbringing and training by an oni and several yokai, she has certain abilities not commonly seen by humans.

Muscle Density

[Physical] | [stroNK] | [Uncommon]

Like Mitsuri, Charlie has a shocking amount of muscle- though hers is from physically sparring with a demon. This makes her one of the few able to arm-wrestle the Love Hashira on equal terms. Charlie's strength also plays a small role in Urogi's initial obsession with her, as she's able to keep up with him and withstand 'playing' with the demon.

Breath Expulsion

[Physical] | [Poison] | [Rare]

Charlie has extraordinarily powerful lungs, and so is able to (aside from holding her breath for 15 minutes) briefly inhale her wisteria incense and shoot a blast of wisteria-infused smoke from her mouth as a poisonous cloud.

Usually used in dire circumstances to give herself an edge, or to save an ally. This ability, at its full potential, is powerful enough to kill very low-level demons and make stronger demons ill.

She tends to wheeze for a while afterward.

Flame Cloak

[Flame] | [Terrifying] | [Legendary]

Using skills taught to her by Yokai, Charlie has been able to learn how to use her oil breathing to coat herself in the liquid, and then ignite it, covering herself in fire. The oil protects her flesh and clothes until it burns out, and the fire dissipates with it.

This ability is psychologically effective to most opponents, demon and human alike.

Immunity to Belladonna

[Physical] | [Poison Resistance] | [Rare]

Akihiko was adamant that Charlie grow resistant to this popular poison, knowing how dangerous the world is and also that associating herself with him would make her a target.

Combat style

Charlotte has two primary combat styles and can switch between them in the middle of battle.

1. A lithe, dancelike style suited to Oil Breathing. She is constantly on the move, slipping around the battlefield with ease, with the intent to dodge attacks while laying down the base for her own.

2. A style inspired by Akihiko's own brutal way of fighting. Charlie unhooks her glaive from itself, giving her two blades that she swipes at the opponent with wicked speed and force, with the intent to keep them unable to react. Often used as her oil thickens.

Inventory

Weapons

Blazing Spire

[Flame] | [effect] | [Unique]

Charlie's primary weapon, a large dual-sided glaive that can split apart into two short spears. It was created by Enkai Yamauchi, an extraordinarily talented (and picky) smith. It is forged with the intent to be as special as Charlie herself is.

It's important to note that unlike characters who wield similar weapons (like Aizetsu and his Yari), Charlotte is often seen leaning on her glaive in a relaxed position. This enables her to react swiftly and flexibly should she be attacked at any point.

Wisteria Slingshot

[-] | [Poison] | [Uncommon]

A generic cloth slingshot that Charlie uses to fling wisteria-filled smoke bombs across the battlefield.

Charlie originally learned how to use a slingshot to help hunt small game.

Daily Use

Baku Totem

[-] | [Psychic] | [common]

Because of her frequent night terrors, Charlie always sleeps with a small totem of the 'Baku' yokai under her pillow. This creature is also carved into the wood on her bedframe in an attempt to invite one to stay so that it can eat her dreams.

Good Luck Charm

[-] | [Luck] | [Common]

A small good luck charm given by Mitsuri to keep Charlie safe on her missions.

Shinobue Flute

[wind] | [?] | [rare]

An old, decorated flute that Akihiko gifted her long ago. She generally only plays in private, and gets flustered with an audience. However, her skill seems to calm down Urogi??

Relationships

Charlie has close relationships with many people, but there are 4 that remain strongest of all.

Akihiko Kanda

Relationship

Charlie's adoptive father.

After saving her from a low-rank demon, he takes the girl under his wing to train her as an attempt at repenting for his horrific deeds whilst under Muzan's influence. Eventually, he grows extremely attached to the foreigner, viewing her as his own daughter- his 'gift from the sea'.

They don't always see eye-to-eye, but love each other dearly. Woe betide any who threatens his child!

Urogi (Hantengu)

Relationship

Probably the most unforseen, forbidden relationship in the history of the Corps. Urogi and Charlie's secret friendship was an accident brought forth by circumstance.

Life is strange.

If you told Charlie that one day she'd become friends with, and then fall in love with the joyous, man-eating, half-bird demon that tried to murder her, then she'd... well. She doesn't know what she'd do. It just sounds bizarre. But, that's what happened, and despite growing to love him dearly, Charlie struggles immensely with feelings of betrayal and dishonor because of their relationship. She fears that allowing these emotions to grow is treasonous, and attempts to ignore them- frustrating the demon who very obviously has a massive crush on his 'pretty little demon killer'.

Giyu Tomioka

Relationship

The first in the Corps to treat Charlie equally and like a person, despite suspicions. When he extended his hand to help her to her feet, Tomioka earned a loyal ally. Now, Charlie frequently can be seen hanging about him in peaceful silence, or cooking his favorite meals. She finds that he's a fantastic listener, and gives surprisingly good advice. They are on a first-name basis, though he will call her by her surname to scold her.

Charlie appreciates his calmness, and finds him to be the easiest person to be around if she starts overthinking. At the very least, she can count on him to listen and not judge.

Mitsuri Kanroji

Relationship

Mitsuri is the first female friend Charlie gains since becoming shipwrecked on Japan. Her warm energy is infectuous, and her sweet personality quickly wormed its way past Charlie's reservations. They bonded quickly over their love of food.

Mitsuri is incredibly supportive of Charlie and seems to genuinely think she's pretty. She is Charlie's biggest self-esteem boost, and the foreigner couldn't be more grateful for it.

They occassionally have arm-wrestle contests where others in the Corps bet on who might win. So far the score is Mitsuri- 9, Charlie- 7.
