Kala left Praque a long time ago, before she was even an adult; it was supposed to be a temporary teenage rebellion -- her parents certainly thought so -- but she never went back. She adapted well to the Wastes, where the strong survived best; if anyone had told her she wasn't supposed to survive out there, she wouldn't have believed them. Her stubbornness is only matched by her strength and adaptability in new situations, and altogether it's a collection of traits that make her an excellent survivor.

She found Indra by an oasis, wasting away, and decided then and there that she would protect her from all harm. The two of them became inseparable; when they came upon Vyre's Fleet and Indra expressed interest in joining, Kala was happy to go along with the idea. She has no talent for science -- there was no opportunity for her to learn it while living in the Wastes -- but she is happy watching her squiggle do the smart stuff while Kala helps her feel safe and secure.
