In an alternate world, Laethen Varrue did not survive to see twenty-five. His proud father mourned (though did not weep, Varrue men do not weep), and moved on, unaware that his son still lingered, invisibly, in the house that they had built together.
This Laethen passed his twenties watching the world go by without him. He fell in with a very different crowd, the ghosts and gods of the land. And he became a very different person.
