History

Hakuba was orphaned at the age of 2, as such, he does not remember much about his blood family. He grew up in an orphanage located in the Kansai region until the age of 10 when he was adopted by an upper-class family from Tokyo. While he was at the orphanage, Hakuba was often neglected by the caretakers and other children. He has horrible self-care habits because of this, often neglecting his own health and wellbeing for others that he has deemed more important. The only friend he had at the orphanage was named Riku Chikafuji. A few years later, Izuki Obata would join the duo thanks to Riku's efforts of tearing down Hakuba’s walls enough to let Izuki enter.

After Hakuba was adopted, he lost touch with both Riku and Izuki. When he found out that Riku worked in a club in Roppongi, he would make it a habit to visit every weekend. It was then that he realized Riku had had a crush on him since their very first meeting back at the orphanage. They started dating shortly afterward and even got engaged as Riku had Hakuba promise they would get married when they were younger. Unfortunately, Riku passed away a few months later due to a surprise gang raid. Hakuba swore off all gangs and gang members after that.

He temporarily joins the 10th Generation Black Dragons to keep a closer eye on Hakkai, whom he had become somewhat friends with due to the both of them having modeled together before. After their defeat, he joins Toman's 2nd Division.

Personality

Hakuba is a polite, stoic, and quiet individual, often having a hard time expressing what he truly feels. His words are usually harsh and blunt, not bothering to fluff them up especially if they are to a stranger as he deems it unnecessary to fake kindess to two-faced people. He does not care about what others think of him and how they perceive him, as he was neglected in the orphanage before he was adopted. As such, he sticks out like a sore thumb at Toman meetings: many often wonder why someone like him is in such a rowdy gang if he was so quiet. Because of his attractive appearance and Kansai accent, Hakuba often attracts attention from the opposite gender much to his dismay. He is very committed to those he considers his friends-- as he does not have many, to begin with-- to the point where he is even willing to die for them.

Hakuba was trained in fencing and is part of the fencing club at school, as such he is very skilled with a rapier. He is proficient in hand-to-hand combat as well, but he prefers not to engage in fights if possible as it upsets his parents when he comes home bruised.

• The name Hakuba means "white" (白), "horse" (馬)
• Hakuba's surname Shimada means "island" (島), "rice field" (田)
• Hakuba's surname before he was adopted, Ishikawa, means "stone" (石), "river" (川)

Trivia

• In the original timeline (before Takemicchi started leaping) Hakuba was an NPA/Secret Police Agent for the Tokyo Police and technically Naoto's superior.
• The people he dislikes or fears are the Haitani brothers.
• His dream is to be able to open/fully fund an orphanage that treats all children equally.
• His heroic story (or failure story): When he was younger, a little boy broke Haruka’s camera when she rejected him and made her cry. So he sent him crying to the teacher with just his words and even got the boy's parents to say they would pay for a new camera for Haruka. But Haruka didn't want that, so they settled for an apology and the boy had after-school cleaning duty for a week.
• His favorite spot is the park where he used to hang out with Riku at.
