The story of Sumu is a folklore. Sumu is "toxin" in Swahili and Sindano  is "needle". Citizens like to believe the creature is an aquatic man  based off of a Lionfish (also known as Zebrafish). Hybrid, shapeshifter,  merman, it is unknown for sure. Because of conflicting explanations of  the man, they say he can go on both land and sea by transforming his  lower body accordingly; also switching his use from lungs to gills. So a  traveler might hear about an African man walking the land with webbed  hands and/or feet that breathes through his mouth, where another passerby might hear about a fishy merman with a tail, using his gills to  breathe as he swims about the sea.

Sumu is said to be a friend to all sea creatures, and the land ones he might come across. A friend that will be seen with him often is a little seahorse. The seahorse currently does not go by a particular given name, but has been nicknamed Minme (mini me) since it can go from its normal clown fish coloration to a camouflaged mimic of Sumu's lion fish design.
