Profile

Bio

A more perfect person doesn’t exist. Mai is a prodigy in every sense of the word and will not let herself be bested. Her mind is brilliant beyond compare, but she doesn’t show that off in school anymore because she’s smart enough to know it’s a sham. Besides, she’s already fluent in four languages, double the amount of her peers. Mai Nangong never loses a fight. The most mercy she’ll grant an opponent is a draw, and that’s usually because she has to get home and work as the perfect waitress in her family’s restaurant. She only lets herself get hit to show off how indestructible she is, though it still leaves bruises and cuts. Masterfully skilled as a pianist, she’s acclaimed several awards for it. Playing in contests is too stuffy for her nowadays. The only reason she’s not flocked by admirers at all times is because she’s simply too intimidating for them. At most, people mock her.

Voice Claim(s)

EPO, Maki Nomiya, Miho Nakayama,  or Junko Yagami. I'm having trouble deciding which of these best fits her.

Personality

For a self-proclaimed beacon of perfection, Mai is fairly casual. She may not-so-subtly brag and boast about herself, but she makes an effort to be kind to people who are nice to her. Those who aren’t get her bad side. However, she only resorts to violence against people who she thinks can stand a fight against her. Most of the fights she gets into aren’t even because she’s angry at her opponent, she’s just… not really great with her emotions, and is constantly plagued by one that makes her feel the need to punch things, so she starts fights to satisfy it. Mai often makes horrible decisions for herself that anyone else would find obvious. She is the kind of person who can easily be goaded into doing anything just to prove that she can, and throughout most of her life, she’s been lucky enough to avoid the serious consequences of that. This isn’t because she doesn’t know better. She just has a very strict set of beliefs about herself that stunts her self-awareness. Mistakes, flaws, and emotions are among things she thinks are beneath her, and when she’s not focused on herself, she’s much better at assessing those in others.

Background

Formerly a farm girl, Mai moved to the big city of Jiyukoku Junction a few years ago. She now lives and works at The Palace Jamboree, Jiyukoku’s best and only Creole-Cantonese fusion restaurant. Her parents own the place, serving up their specialty of plain rice porridge for the elderly regulars. They mostly show up for the charming family. Behind closed doors, however, the family isn’t as happy as they appear to be, as Mr. and Mrs. Namgung weren’t satisfied with their perfect daughter, and she instead decided to become the perfect rebel. Mai not only fails her exams, she fails them with perfect zeroes. The only time she doesn’t is when trying to make high enough grades to pass her classes, since being stuck in highschool forever isn’t part of her plan. She skips school to start fist fights with other delinquents. Her peers aren’t too fond of her either, as she’s too cocky, aggressive, and attention-seeking for their private school atmosphere. They make fun of her for her clothes, which closely resembles the boys’ uniform. It’s actually her work attire. A mixup in shipping resulted in her getting sent undersized gakuran instead of the cheongsam dresses she was supposed to receive. Her parents didn’t care enough to correct it, and now force her to wear it at all times in order to stay ‘work-minded’. Through some circumstances, she ends up meeting Toni.

Relationships

Toni - "He's nice. I like him." Toni is the first person Mai has genuinely cared about in years and she's not too sure how to feel about that. Mai can tell that she and Toni are very, very different people, but he treats her with kindness. He treats her like a friend. Because of this, she finds herself confiding in him in a way she's never been able to before, even though it sometimes leads her to feel icky and vulnerable. Mai may not always know how to handle her new friend, but she's willing to learn for his sake.
