She calls herself Momma, and will adopt any babies from any species she finds. Sparrow is her favorite child and she is very protective of him. She has enough human intelligence to speak and have some human feelings, but she has enough animal instincts to kill and devour humans or any other creature that threatens her or Sparrow. But it's not something she likes to do, she doesn't want to hurt, but she will if she has to.
She is a descendant of test subjects and has the ability to speak. But her speech isn't always great. Over time things had changed a lot, because the lab was destroyed and the animals escaped, they no longer had as much contact with humans. So by the time she was born, their language was deteriorating a bit. So there are things that she has a hard time explaining, and she doesn't know the name for everything. She will make up her own words for things when she needs to.
While raising Sparrow Momma was faced with many challenges. Early on she learned he needed different sorts of food than she ate, he became sick and she ventured out closer to human settlements than she'd ever gone before. She went in the evening near sunset and tried to remain stealthy. She watched how humans lived and learned bits about them, she stole food from them but didn't go unnoticed for long. Momma probably has many scars under her fur from getting shot at, but it didn't stop her. She did lessen her trips once she learned some very basic, primitive cooking skills.
And that was just the beginning, Momma began trying to humanize herself as much as possible, as her goal was to eventually send Sparrow back out into the world like she did the rest of her children. She worked hard trying to make her home look more like what she'd seen in the human settlements, she would listen to them speak and tried to copy their words so she could bring home new vocabulary.
