idk yet but some ideas are; He had quite some trouble using his wings / something traumatic happened ( He fell from immense height) , so he now travels around by horse. He might try to fly if it's really neccesary, but his wings aren't well trained because of lack of using them. He probably didn't grow up in the bird kingdom because that's a huge mess. He met princess Lily when they were still quite young. He told her about his adventures, came back every once in a while with small presents and new stories to tell her. They fell in love. When they're older, they marry.
