Summary

|Babbette|Aries|African American|INTP|1923|

In the early 18th century and after the civil war black people  moved onto an island off the coast of the U.S. to create a community for themselves, The American Commonwealth of Freedmen, "The 'Wealth" for short. Though The 'Wealth is thought to be controlled by black male politicians, white American aristorcrats control damn near everything through business with the elite of the commonwealth. They make sure that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, though keeping up the guise that The Wealth is for the people.

Nubia is part of the elite Monroe family and is her parent's fourth daughter, sixth child. She was treated like the "red-headed step child" of the family because of her dark complexion, an attribute not desired by the black upper class of the period. This created a tough yet lonely girl who is always looking for the attention and love of others, even if that means taking on risky endeavors.

Basics
Name (Pronunciation)[Meaning]: Babette Nubia Monroe-

Nubia probably came from the Egyptian word for gold “Nbw” and was the name of an ancient kingdom south of Africa. Her mother gave her this middle name because of her dark skin. Babette is the French version of Elizabeth, meaning “My God is Oath” and her mother gave her this as a first name because her mother was named Babette. Monroe means “from the mouth of the roe” the roe being a river in Ireland. Her middle name is of Egyptian and Roman origins, her first name is French and her last name is English/Scottish.

Her face includes wide lips and "sultry" eyes, as many call them, with full eyelashes.

Personality/Attributes
Personality/Attitude: Babs in the start of her life and throughout her teenage years is known for being a docile, quiet girl with unmatchable intelligence in her peer group. She's dependent on other people and the attention they gave her, but besides her scholastic achievements she's often ignored for her other siblings. This causes her to be a bit of a loner with a low self-esteem, knowing just how to keep herself occupied whilst being alone and feeling unlikeable. Anybody who gave her some type of love and attention, however, would gain her enternal loyalty. The docile and sweet persona hid a quick-witted girl, however, who loved to banter with her small group of damn near equally intelligent friends. This sharp-sighted personality continues onto her young adulthood, where she becomes a tougher shell to crack, yet still as much of an attention-seeker as ever. She uses her sharp tounge to battle against anybody putting her down, from strangers to family members. Her docility turned to hostility towards her bullies and nay-sayers. She becomes the prideful girl she always wanted to be but never knew she could be, slowly becoming less and less dependent on others and what they say. Slowly though.

Background:

Backstory: Babs was born into the elite Monroe family. Her grandfather was known as a "founding father" to the Commonwealth, figthing for accesible education for all black people and promoting them to move to The 'Wealth to obtain that education. He could be single handedly credited for bringing in a 4th of the Wealth's population after the Civil War. Babs father was a teacher who, after obtaining his law degree, became a lawyer for politicians and is beginning his own political career. Her mother is also a former teacher who became a housewife after her 3rd child, though that didn't stop her from working. She becomes a philanthropist, working as treasurer in a program for mid and upper class housewives who want to help poor woman and their children. She had three older sisters, all leaving the house for college and careers in teaching (though one chose the nursing life after a year of annoying children) at sometime before she entered middle school. She has one older brother, but they were Irish Twins, him only being 10 months older. She has one younger brother, adopted, and a younger sister.

Her younger sisters ends up becoming the star of the family. She had a cute, pudgy body, light skin, and long curly hair. She was the black elites vision of the perfect daughter and the perfect young lady. Even though Babs was a bit more on the education side, little sister became a model and a dancer in her younger years, overshadowing her older sister in every measure of the word. Unfair world right? Every scholastic achievement she reached was celebrated for a second before her sister unsuspectingly overshadows her. Even though she didn't understand that it was colorism at first, through bullying at school and snide comments made by family, she notices that her dark skin was the "Problem".

Her first friendship was with the daughter of a woman deemed as a "whore" for her relations with a white man who supports her luxurious lifestyle. Though this angered her father for a moment he accepted that any friendship was good for his lonely daughter. This friend, Alexandrae,  and her beautiful mother, Cecilia , taught Babs about self love when no one else would. Through also befriending her maids daughter, Bethlehem, Babs found away to not be as alone as she use to be. Through writing many poems and songs she had outlet for emotions she couldn't even tell her best friends.

As she grows up she becomes persistent in becoming a lawyer instead of a teacher, breaking a  Monroe family tradition and gender roles at the time, and she wants to go to college in mainland U.S. and Howard University. During college when she comes home for break she begins to venture the city she was born in with her girlfriends. This brings her to the popular and huge club Afroasia (working name), managed by a Blasian young lady. In this place she meets with the manager and is given the oppurtunity to sing and ghostwrite music without fearing any of her elite brothers will ever know. She also meets with the "scum" of 'Wealth society. People she'd never meet in the Gated Communities she was sheltered in. Through this she learns about the humanity of the people the rich tell you are monsters and animals.

Tropes:

Not With them for the MoneyHer arrangement to marry Clairmont may have been because both of these families are rich and that it could bring their family name upwards, however she is generally marrying him because he's interesting. If it was just for the money she would have called it off, regardless of her parent's begging.

Lonely Rich KidHer childhood was mainly like this.

Old MoneyHer family has been rich since the early 1800s, the Monroe family having a huge black business in the North.
