Wendell von Alberbach

Personality

Due to being raised by the nuns of Azazel, Wendell became a very religiously devout individual. His attachment to Azazel, the wyrm of the freezing cold, goes beyond even what his fellow nuns were comfortable in. In fact, Wendell is convinced that Azazel is like a mother to him, making him more important than most people. It's believed he uses this attachment to his wyrm as a way to cope with the trauma of his family's death, thus the nuns did not try to interfere with his religious delusions. He also grew resentful of his father, Wilhelm, for abandoning him and carries this resentment toward most male figures of authority.

As a dedicated follower of Azazel, Wendell also enacts judgement on people with differing beliefs as him. He does not tolerate any percieved slander toward his wyrm, he takes it very personally in fact. He also sees people who forsake Azazel as being heretical and not worth his respect. Most of all, he despises Faustine and sees her as a witch for forsaking the wyrms and particpating in dark arts.

History

Wendell was born into the esteemed von Alberbach family to his noblewoman mother, Petra, and his former great general father, Wilhelm. Wendell was the third youngest of ten siblings and had a relatively normal childhood until his father, Wilhelm, went out on a trip to the capital. Then, his home was broken into by a group of hired mercenaries and most of his family was slaughtered. However, Petra took Wendell to their catacombs and hid in one of the coffins. Unfortunately for them, the events of that tragedy occured in the dead winter and Petra died due to hypothermia, which then led to Wendell using her body to survive. Wendell was the only survivor of the slaughter.

When Wilhelm returned from the capital, he was despaired and knew the mercenaries were hired by his enemies, the royal family, as a ploy. Knowing Wendell's life was in danger, he secretly took him to a convent for the wyrm Azazel and left him there in the protection of the nuns, lying to the world that all of his children were slaughtered. Despite Wilhelm seeing this as him doing it for the greater good, Wendell couldn't comprehend why his father would abandon him when he was his only family left. So, Wendell then threw himself into worshipping Azazel. Over the years, he started to believe that his mother freezing to death, leading to his survival, was actually a sign from Azazel herself that he was special and specifically chosen by her. The nuns, unsure of what to do about it, let Wendell believe in this because they figured it would be cruel to tell a traumatized child he was wrong. Wendell wanted to devote his life to being a nun like the sisters who raised him, until he gets wrapped up into his father's plans once again.
