Fabian resents his father, and always has. When his moms were killed in a car accident, and his father took him in... Well, Mac never was a dad. Fabian indulged himself in everything but the real world, playing video games and doing anything but acknowledging the real world. He was never social, and his only form of approval from Mac was good grades. He never had a parental figure in him. When Mac finally came around, Fabian resented him even more. How can he only realize now how much his actions had hurt him, how can he have gone so many years not noticing how much Fabian was suffering? Nowadays, Fabian takes the money and gifts as free things. Nothing Mac will ever try can mend their nonexistent relationship.
Mac was never a very good father. In his youth, he was so focused on his own success, that when his sister died and Fabian became his responsibility... He pushed it off. He had never signed up for parenting and had no idea what to do - He was young, dumb, and irresponsible. Fabian grew up with babysitters as his only parents. It was only when Mac grew older did he notice the effect his actions had on his son. But at that point, it was far too late. He would give anything to go back and be a better father, and the guilt eats at him constantly. In the present, he attempts to make up for what he did to Fabian with gifts and constant attention - but what's done is done.
