P13R5 was born into Ishito-Norris PMC: A randomly-chosen egg and sperm, grown in a vat, raised without a family to be a police officer and soldier. Despite his detached upbringing, Beckett has a high level of empathy and a strong sense of justice. Unfortunately, he's also a victim of a strange disease that vastly increases a patient's ability to interface with technology, but slowly turns them into a technological zombie. Without much hope for a cure, Beckett works to improve the lives of those around him before his illness takes him.

Appearance

Beckett has an unassuming build, relatively of average height, weight and muscle mass. He is covered head to toe in a uniform, mostly blue with white trim and designed to emulate the appearance of a biker. His helmet is black with an opaque blue visor and blue and white accents; the design of the helmet also resembles a motorcyclist's, but with a cold and imposing military air.

Under the helmet, Beckett has short, straight red-orange hair, freckled skin, and wide, starry green eyes. His complexion, however, is marred by the strange disease that plagues Ishito-Norris soldiers: a large portion of his face has been replaced with a mechanical skin and musculature, and his left eye appears dead and mechanical. As a result, he tries to cover his face at all times.

Personality

Beckett was raised to police and interface with the general public, and as such, he's surprisingly socially adjusted. He has some blind, dogmatic beliefs about the company that raised him, but beyond that, he's optimistic and genial. He's quick to befriend random strangers, even the ones he's supposed to arrest, and believes that everyone deserves a second chance. His sense of justice tends to get him in trouble, but he's pretty good at thinking fast and coming up with solutions to the problems he creates.

Despite his optimism, he is worried about the progress of the disease that wracks his body. He had friends who once showed the same symptoms, and after a certain point they mysteriously disappeared. He's heard the rumors about the things Ishito-Norris does to them, but they can't be true... can they? Nevertheless, feeling his mortality gives him a level of compassion beyond what his normal self. He can sense when others are suffering, even when they themselves do not realize it, and it is his goal to reach out to as many of these hurting individuals as possible before... well, whatever happens eventually.

Ultimately, Beckett is not a particularly deep individual. When you peel back his external layer of dumb, outgoing happiness, you find more layers of dumb, outgoing happiness. But sometimes, that's just what the world needs.

Story

Many years ago, Ishito-Norris had a vision. As other PMCs were gearing up to develop newer, shinier weapons and better robots, the innovators at IN knew that robots, good as they may be, couldn't universally replace humans. Humans may be prone to error, but they had a sense of nuance and handling that was difficult to replicate. The solution? Remove as many of the error variables as possible, and sell the human labor.

To remove the negative variables, they'd use IVF techniques to randomly create children, from vast banks of donated genetic material to remove the chances of any parents forming attachments. The genetic material could also be screened early for pesky disabilities, developing an in-house army of perfect soldiers. Once born, they'd be raised in company-provided communes with all the amenities they could desire, and all the training they'd need to make perfect soldiers.

So, P13-R5 was born into this tiny, insular world. His reports say that he showed no anomalies and would one day make a great soldier. By age 18, he was ready for field work, and quickly gained recognition from his superiors for his delicate, but firm touch.

It was around this time that he started meeting dangerous influences, however, like eco-terrorist Wally Miyazaki. He dealt firmly with those he was told to police, but he was ultimately soft-hearted and had a surprising level of empathy. In terrorism he saw people who wanted to be heard; in cultists he saw conditioning not unlike what he had gone through. When he could, he discreetly let criminals he thought deserved a second chance escape his custody. It wasn't much, but he couldn't imagine a life outside of Ishito-Norris' care, and couldn't let go.

A few years ago he heard about the first cases of the strange illness befalling his fellow officers. The company told them that it was a rare defect befalling some that had accepted more advanced cybernetics. It started harmlessly enough, with the ability for the victims to integrate seamlessly-- and often instantly-- with technology and other cybernetics. But as time went on, the machinery began to overtake and replace wounds, and sometimes spontaneously replaced skin with metal regardless of prior damage to the area. Victims would exhibit increasingly erratic and mechanical behavior. In late stages, they seemed to disappear altogether-- sometime becoming data in the Veil, other times, turning up dead for good. It was very worrying, but not a common illness, and IN was working fervently to find a cure for the disease. Beckett tried not to worry about it too much, but to his horror discovered he was already in the early stages of the disease.

His confidence in his home company is shaken, but he's determined to continue fighting until the strange illness completely overtakes him.

When election season came around, Beckett and some other Ishito-Norris soldiers were assigned to a mission to protect a politician who wanted to develop a garden for the city. During a major speech, she was attacked by chess-themed terrorists, but quick thinking on the part of himself and Wally got her out of trouble and to a safehouse. Along the way, they picked up a cultist named Bask, Ye Sinners, and immediately found themselves with a problem. Their mutual friend, Norton Evans, had accidentally let himself get kidnapped.

After running around the city on a bit of a wild goose chase, they learned about the terrorist organization, Gambit, and pinpointed their hiding place. Beckett and Wally went on a twofold mission to rescue Norton and sabotage the terrorists' equipment, so that the construction of the city garden may go unhindered. Along the way, Beckett merged his consciousness with a self-driving pickup truck's, allowing him to directly drive cars and override their safety protocols.

Though the rescue and sabotage turned out largely successful, Beckett became untrusting of Bask's strange insistence to visit with the politician once more. With quick thinking, Beckett was able to move the politician to a new, safer location, and bought time to stop Bask. He later learned that the meek Norton had chosen to go toe-to-toe with the hulking and battle-hardened cultist, but his persistence and excellent tactics won out, and Bask was captured.

That ended the events of the day, but Beckett is more questioning of Ishito-Norris' intentions than ever. He is considering defecting from the company. But after these events, he's confident that, for the first time in his life, he has people he can trust outside of his company.

Powers and abilities

  • Technological Interfacing

Beckett's strange illness comes with two boons; the first is that he can integrate seamlessly with existing technology and cybernetics. He can add new cybernetics without worrying about negative repercussions, and he can also integrate AIs into his own consciousness, giving him control over the machines that automate the world.

  • Regeneration

Due to the ability of his cybernetics to self-repair, Beckett can no longer be killed. Mortal wounds will stop him for an amount of time, but he'll wake up later, maybe dazed and a little confused.

  • Military/Police Training

Beckett was born to be a soldier—quite literally. Ishito-Norris began training him in combat and PMC-to-civillian relationships around the same time he started to walk and talk. He's good at keeping calm in situations which would unnerve or disturb others, and can use many types of guns and melee arms efficiently. He prefers a flechette pistol as his main weaponbut can improvise in most situations, and he's also good at negotiation and deescalation.
