Problematic in Porcelain
"Wow, you really ARE obsessed with me."
Petty, overindulgent, bratty- these are just some of the words that have been used in articles and clickbait videos to describe Lys. In one sense, he's exactly the type of cliché you'd expect. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, in line to inherit a prosperous media conglomerate, and has barely worked a day of his life. In lieu of attention from his wealthy father and socialite mother, he's turned to manipulating the limelight instead. Rarely a week goes by without him gracing the front page of some two-bit tabloid, and his social media presence is strong and controversial. But could there be more to this pampered Porcellana beneath the mask?
The thing is, Lys isn't... necessarily real. He's developed a habit of adapting facade after facade, so perfectly acted you'd never know that underneath, he is far more embittered and unstable than he seems. He may seem like a spoiled brat with barely two braincells to rub together, but in reality he is far more cunning, locked in a cyclical pattern of destruction and self-destruction. He's prone to outbursts of extreme violence and adores bloodshed, and swings between extremes of self-esteem.
Things spiralled since his twin brother Leone, the golden child, ran away from home several years ago. The two of them were exceptionally close and it led to Lys feeling he had been abandoned. Forever the silver medal child, the pressure of being his father's sole remaining heir got to Lys. Not that it mattered, as he soon realised even that wouldn't make his father look at him as anything more than a nuisance. That, and a string of unhealthy romantic relationships, marked his decline into who he is now. Once a quiet, academic child, he's barely recognisable now.
While it's been fun, pretending to be this shallow caricature of himself, Lys craves something more. What, he doesn't really know. Especially not when his cruel father is constantly one step ahead. He's very much at a turning point- and whether he falls further or is able to make a life of his own is yet to be seen.

Personality
Charming
If you can ignore the occasional passive aggression and smug smiles, Lys is actually quite the darling. He's experienced in the ways of romance, and can confidently flirt all night long with his mark of choice. Throw in his Porcellanan eyes, compelling and honey-sweet, and it's hard not to find yourself mesmerized. Until he opens his mouth.
Entertaining
What kind of Areleous would he be if he didn't know how to throw a great party? Lys loves to have a good time, and even though he's entirely self-serving, his passion is infectious. And even if you're not the social type, his constant diatribes on social media are bound to get a laugh. He's an actor, through and through, and it shows.
Deceptive
The entire foundation of Lys's personality is a lie. He purposefully exaggerates aspects of himself, playing up the brat persona, while covertly breaking people down, piece by piece. He's not afraid to manipulate and lie his way to the top. See him for who he really is, and you'll find a far more sober character.
Cruel
As well as hiding his true disposition, Lys also carefully covers up the sheer malice he is capable of. When he tips the tabloids off, he's sure to use a pseudonym or a go-between. He doesn't care who he hurts. In fact, it brings him some personal gratification to see someone suffer because of him. If he had to suffer, why shouldn't they?
Hedonistic
With all the wealth and privilege that comes with being the heir to a conglomerate, it would be foolish for Lys not to indulge- at least, that's his justification for the sheer amount of debauchery he engages with. Rich food, expensive perfume, designer clothes, fast cars, celebrity endorsements- the more, the better. He won't lower himself to anything cheaper. Sure, it might not be healthy to drink and party every day. Lys he doesn't care.
Resentful
Buried deep within Lys is an insidious anger brought on from years of being dismissed and overshadowed. Bitter exes have used him as a stepping stone to further glory. His prideful father rebuffs him no matter what he tries. The world sees him as foolish and naive. Over the years, Lys has learned to find satisfaction in being despised- it's often the only attention he gets. But at the same time, he dreams of a day when he will finally be able to take revenge.
Appearance
Basics
Lys himself has very soft, delicate features, with squishable cheeks and round amber eyes. He's very pale, although he's rarely seen without some make-up on. His brows are always perfectly manicured, of course. Like his twin he has slightly wavy blonde hair, which he keeps short but rarely styles beyond sweeping it aside. He has a generally average build, with less-defined features and a fairly soft frame.
Vampiric traits
As a Porcellana, Lys carries with him an unearthly beauty that's just as unsettling as it is compelling. At first glance he seems like a regular human, but peer a little closer and you'll realise something isn't right. His skin is flawless. Too flawless. It's completely devoid of any imperfections or notches and is as smooth as a doll's. And that's because he is one! Sort of. Porcellana have ball-jointed limbs that are actually detachable, glassy eyes and blue-tinged flesh. They can blend in fairly easily with humans up until a certain point- older Porcellana's faces appear like masks permanently affixed to their skulls. Lys is pretty young, though, so he can get away with it.
Style
In terms of dress, it's designer or bust. He keeps track of the latest trends, whether to conform to them or defy them, and he loves to style himself in the most extravagant, flowery ways possible. Pastel pinks, peaches and golds are a staple part of his wardrobe and he loves to accessorise with glasses or hairclips. Long, floaty fabrics and fitted floral suits are a recurring favourite, but he just as much likes to lounge around in something comfy and loose. As long as the price tag is obscenely high, he'll wear it.

Story
Childhood
Alaric Areleous and Vivienne Émile were united in what can only be described as a hasty political marriage- a last-ditch attempt to mend the faltering allegiance between the two families. It was to this turbulent landscape that their twin children, Leone and Alexandre, were born. A rocky start, and one that would not improve from here.
Vivienne, who had essentially been forced into the marriage, had never wanted children- let alone twins. And Alaric, ever-detached, simply sat to the side and waited to see what his boys would grow into. And so the twins were usually foisted on a host of nannies, or left in the nursery of their ancestral home, Brandt House. Brandt House was hardly a friendly place to raise two children, acting more as a memorial to the Areleous legacy than anything, and it was as if the twins were a new exhibit in this endless museum.
It wasn't long before Vivienne disappeared from their lives altogether. When the twins turned five, she and Alaric divorced, and the Émile family formally ended their partnership with him. She would only appear from this point to brag about their achievements to her high society friends, even if she played no part in them. The Émiles made sure to disown the twins. With that, they were purely heirs of the Areleous name, and all the pressure that entails.
The twins experienced a very stringent childhood. Before they'd even started school, they had extensive schedules mapping out every minute of the day. They had expectations far higher than their little hands could possibly reach. But at the very least they had each other. Leone and Alexandre were two halves of a whole, speaking in their own language until they learned to talk, and rarely seen apart. They spent most of their hours trapped within the nursery playacting fairytales, solving puzzles, and telling each other stories. In this stuffy, suffocating world, they were each other's light.
They attended primary school together, spending several years at a Welsh boarding school. The scant time they spent with their father became even more so. Yet despite his apparent absence, Alaric kept a very close eye on them both, examining their every move with surgical detail.
The reason for this became clear upon their graduation. Rather than allow them to continue on, the twins were returned to London. All of their academic achievements, every pass and fail, all studied under their father's inscrutable criteria. And Leone, who had always been quieter and softer and quicker to scare, was the one chosen to remain at Brandt House and be homeschooled. As the favourite. As the heir.
Alexandre was devastated. Not only was he being separated from his closest friend and being shipped off to a strict private school in London, but he'd failed his father. Despite all his efforts, he had let him down. He vowed at this point to work as hard as he could, to impress Alaric and prove he was just as capable of bearing the Areleous name.
Teenage years
As the years went by, Leone's responsibilities grew, and he was driven further into the gilded cage his father built for him. Meanwhile, Alexandre suffered under the strain of life at secondary school. He was nearly buried under the weight of the responsibilties laid on him- fencing, piano, ballet, elocution, business studies, languages were all crammed into his timetable- and that's not even counting his actual schoolwork, which he was expected to get straight A's in. But he took to it, trying and scrambling to be a true Areleous- even if he still didn't truly understand what that meant.
The twins saw less and less of each other, but whenever Alexandre got a chance, he made sure to tell Leone about his adventures in the outside world. Amongst the stress, he did at least enjoy befriending and entertaining fellow students. There was, of course, also the fear that he'd be outed as a vampire, so he couldn't let anyone too close. That, and he was slightly nervous of what Alaric might do to a potential human subject. But he did have fun. Leone enjoyed listening to him, and was, to his credit, not jealous.
The divide between the two only widened as they continued through their teenage years. Alexandre could never seem to get it right- he was too loud, or too familiar, or too affectionate. His grades were amazing, but not enough. He won competitions, but not all of them, so Alaric barely noticed. Leone, meanwhile, seemed to be perfect in every way- the golden child. He was bright, obedient, loyal, and it was like he could do no wrong. Alexandre didn't want to be upset about this. He loved Leone more than anything. But it hurt, to constantly feel like an outsider in his own family.
Things went further downhill when they turned eighteen.
There was an argument. Alexandre didn't remember what it was about. It was stupid, petty. He didn't mean what he said. All that mattered was the very next day, Leone disappeared.
Amidst the sheer chaos, he was struck with the dull, painful realisation that his twin brother had abandoned him. He hadn't even left a note. No reason why, no indication he ever planned on returning. And something in Alexandre broke. He didn't have anyone else. Leone had left him alone, and for what? All that latent resentment boiled over into rage, and the stalwart institution of Alexandre Areleous began to disintegrate.
Some selfish part of him hoped that now, at least, his father would look at him. Would be proud of him. Would love him. Instead, Alaric seemed to turn his full attention to Alexandre's cousin, Val, a warm, charismatic person who seemed to be everything Alexandre wasn't. They'd been fairly friendly as children, but Alexandre grew to hate them.
While he still thought he could gain his father's approval, he decided to audition for a place at the Royal Academy of Music, which is where he met one Calixte Tredoux. Calixte was mean and sharp, but Alexandre convinced himself he was in love. They had a short-lived but impactful relationship that ended when Alexandre failed to get a place at the Academy. A Tredoux didn't date losers.
Forever a romantic, though, Alexandre continued to try and fill the void in his life by flitting from partner to partner, no matter how they treated him. In some way, he dreamed of meeting someone who could take him away from here. Cue Octave Marchand, a beautiful, alluring lover who promised him that much before ripping the rug out from underneath him. Cue a different man who cheated on him again and again, until he barely remembered what trust felt like. Cue a new partner, who neglected to tell him that none of this was ever real.
He was too weak, right? That was the problem. Too palateable. People looked at him and saw an easy target. A dumbass little rich boy desperate for anyone to care about him. He tried to be what his father wanted, and for what? A few trophies and the knowledge he'd never be good enough? It didn't matter that he knew Alaric only ever saw Leone as his pet project, another test subject to mould into something else, it didn't matter that it was his partners that chose to hurt him, Alexandre blamed himself and everything he was.
And so, he decided he had to be something else.
Adulthood
It happened so slowly most people barely noticed at first, but in the span of several months, a quiet academic bloomed into a loudmouthed bitch of a man. He started going by Lys, quit all his extracurriculars, and threw out every shred of the person he used to be. Because Alexandre was weak, and stupid, and naive, he became louder, more callous, harder to like. Harder to hurt.
While he'd engaged with partying and drinking before, it grew to a new, destructive level. He vaguely noted that his mental health was spiralling to an extremely low point, and did not care.
Being miserable about it sure was boring, though, so he didn't bother with that. He had a wonderful time meeting new people, then either fucking them or fighting them. Glitz and glamour became his whole life. Designer clothes, lavish parties, fancy wine- all of it was easy to get a hold of and even easier to brag about. In-between that, he had a brief stint on a teenage soap opera, and the number of eyes on him skyrocketed.
People barely knew who Alexandre was, but they sure had a lot of opinions on Lys. Namely that he was obnoxious and bratty and spoiled. And Lys revelled in the limelight. Never before had he felt so seen! It didn't matter that they hated him because at this point, hate and love were so irrevocably intertwined in his mind that he didn't care. He was on their minds, keeping them up at night, and he adored it. He loved being the bitch for once. Vampiric and human media alike loved to hate him, and he quickly learned how to get the tabloids to keep writing about him. He became almost addicted to the constant stream of negative attention. Even when it hurt, it felt exhilerating and right.
Still, his father did not look at him. His mother only talked to him now to berate him. The mask that had once been a defense became suffocating. He lost himself. At some point, the interwoven personas he had created smothered all he had been. He didn't recognise himself in the mirror, and became scared that underneath the bravado and malice and arrogance there was nothing left.
After his relationship with 'career criminal' H. Scully ground to an awkward end, Alaric finally stepped in. His wayward heir was cause a few too many problems for the family reptuation, and enough was enough. He shipped Lys off first to Vassiliou Academy, a dance school in the south of Cyprus, in the hopes that its draconian headmistress would whip him into shape. Lys lasted a few months before getting expelled. Not to be dissuaded, his father sent him off to Windbite instead.
Lys had absolutely no intention of trying. He'd been there, done that, worn the model student t-shirt. Academia was so 2015. He skipped all of his classes, antagonised his classmates, and generally made a huge nuisance of himself. But things were about to take a turn. Lys was about to fall in love. Again.
Trivia
His motifs include fragrances, porcelain, fairytales, petals, dessert food, spotlights and rose gold.
He can shapeshift into a porcelain swan, decked in flowers. Whenever he shifts back, he'll be adorned in small ceramic feathers for a few hours.
Collects Furbies. Modifying them is a big hobby of his. His favourite is a long boy named Sir Alfonzo von Bingley-Hotten, but he also has a variety of others named after French desserts, flowers, and notably, his exes.
He's dipped his toes into quite a few pursuits over the years. Fencing and piano were the main two, but the one that's persisted through the years is acting. He was formerly a recurring character on weekly soap 'Young Hearts Run Free', until his character was killed off horribly.
Due to a lack of regular care, his ball-joints are often stiff and painful. He also experiences pain in sites of previous fractures.
Has spent a lot of time abroad in both France and Italy, where some of his relatives live. It's mostly an excuse to get fucked up overseas. Lives full-time in England though (his dad won't let him move out permanently).
His favourite film is absolutely Mean Girls, but he has a soft spot for Legally Blonde and Clueless. When he's in a worse mood, he loves Jennifer's Body and Heathers.
Don't call him a goose.

Relationships
Leone Areleous
Lys used to be close to his twin, once. As children, they only ever had each other, and spent all of their time together. But as they grew older, their father Alaric pushed them further and further apart, purposefully favouring Leone in a bid to push Lys over the edge. Ultimately, Leone ran away. Lys doesn't talk about him anymore. He misses him deeply, but the betrayal he felt at being left behind stings to this day.
Alaric Areleous
Alaric has made a point to pretty much ignore his eldest son, and whenever they do interact, he's usually berating Lys for one thing or another. He purposefully goes out of his way to make Lys feel like shit. Lys is completely aware of this, but he still yearns for his father's approval and affection, despite knowing that if he ever did receive it, it wouldn't be genuine. Unbeknownst to him, Alaric is perhaps even worse than that, using a cycle of neglect to wear Lys down to be easier to manipulate.
Vivienne Émile
Vivienne has made no secret of the fact that she wants very little to do with her children, given their tie to the family she tried very hard to escape. That said, she has a habit of turning up whenever Lys or Leone achieve something, seemingly with the goal of making herself look good. Lys doesn't like her, and is particularly frustrated with her lack of communication.
Val Areleous
Lys despises Val for essentially replacing him, reducing his chances of ever becoming the golden child to nearly zero. He wilfully works against them, selling off their secrets to the press, and even going as far to snitch about their friends to his father's secretary. It's definitely unfair for Lys to pin Val as one of the main sources of his suffering, especially when they've tried hard to get through to him, but it's a hill he's unfortunately dying on.
Kuu Areleous
Kuu and Lys have an uneasy tolerance for each other, although neither would call the other a close friend. They're both on the lower rung of the Areleous family, so they can relate to each other, but they're far too different- Kuu is too serious and boring in Lys's eyes, and he's too immature and cruel in hers. As allies go, Lys doesn't think Kuu's the best. Even so, he won't complain about having her on side.
Rafail Vourdalak
The most insufferable enemies to lovers duo known to mankind. Lys's immediate response upon realising he was attracted to Rafail was 'okay, he needs to die'. That didn't happen, fortunately, and instead Lys's feelings got way, way worse. They seem to be over the will-they-won't-they for now, at least, although there's a lot of shit they need to mutually work through.
Elisei Kraev
There was maybe a burgeoning sense of trust here, but Lys being Lys got scared of being burnt and lashed out. He doesn't understand what Elisei's intentions are with him. Friendship? Yeah, fuck off, nobody tries to get close unless they want something.
