Backstory

Charlotte has no memory of her mother; a woman who died to give her life. Perhaps she would have turned out differently had her mother survived childbirth, but the reality of the newborn's position was cruelly decided by fate.

A blonde halfling was born in Bryha on the eve of November into House Troy - an upstart noble family with no heir. Her mother, Anastasia, had been married to her father, William, one year prior to her birth. In exchange for his financial support when her own house had fallen on hard times, Anastasia's family leant it's noble name and history to William. In essence, he had bought himself a title, and his wife was merely the stepping stone he needed to rise higher in society.

Due to the political nature of their relationship, William felt no real loss when he was notified of his wife's passing, but he was displeased to learn that Anastasia had failed her duty to him in bearing a male heir. Instead, his first wife was a thorn in his side until the very end, burdening him with an unwanted daughter. It was only weeks after Anastasia's passing that William married his second wife, who'd formerly been his mistress for some time.

The following winter, House Troy was graced with a son.

Charlotte would not understand her position until much later on in life. Instead, despite living in her brother's shadow, she made her best effort to impress her father in the hopes of earning his love. Charlotte worked tirelessly in her studies, but despite praise from her tutors, her father would never look her way. Rather than winning her father's affections, she'd invoked the ire of her stepmother. Looking back now, this had been her first mistake of many.

Lord William's second wife was named Agnes. Lady Agnes did not acknowledge Charlotte as her stepdaughter - and that was putting it mildly. Once she realized the young halfling was upstaging her son, Lady Agnes took notice of Charlotte as a threat and began working in secret to ruin her.

The ruination of young Charlotte involved many cruel strategies over the years, and anything short of outright murder was seen as fair game. Without the support of her birth mother and neglected completely by her father, the young girl was defenseless against these attacks. Charlotte wore a smiling mask around others, unwilling to admit defeat and determined to appear unaffected. She grew accustomed to bottling up her emotions in public and unleashing her pent up rage in private.

At the time, nobody had the faintest inkling that the benevolent 'White Stag of Troy' was secretly a wild beast.

In noble society, one is not truly recognized as an adult until they are introduced into the noble circle through an event hosted by their family called a “Debutante Ball”. Just like every other noble girl who came of age, Charlotte, too, was to have her debutante upon reaching adulthood.

After years of anticipation and months of planning, the night that would truly be hers alone had arrived. Dressed to the nines in a gown of custom make, Charlotte felt more dazzling in that moment than she had ever before in her life. She waited at the ballroom's double doors with giddy excitement for her father, who would be her escort for the evening.

She lived this way, restrained and anxious, until the day of her Debutante ball; when she would finally be recognized as an adult and make her entrance into high society.
It was on that day that she discovered that she would be betrothed to a man 50 years her senior. She bore this, too, and even made an effort to get to know her fiance and fulfill her "duty" as a lady of house Troy.
When alone with her husband to be, she attempted to introduce herself but was struck so hard she was knocked to the ground, where she was informed that she would not speak unless spoken to. Charlotte attempted to stand and protest but was struck over the head with a wine glass, splitting her face open.
As his filthy hands grabbed at her wrists, she reacted in self defense, pushing him over the balcony.
Fleeing into the crowded ballroom, she was made a spectacle of with her torn clothes and bleeding face. She tried to make her case to her father as onlookers whispered, watching the scene unfold with sadistic intrigue.
Her father, not willing to risk the connections and business relationships he had with her fiance, publicly denouncing her for all to see - before disowning her.
"No daughter of mine would act in such an undignified manner. Guards, seize her."
Charlotte saw red. As the guards moved in to apprehend her, she began to fight - pulling off a weapon from a nearby statue and fighting tooth and nail against the guards who swarmed around her, their numbers and efforts growing ever stronger, threatening to overpower her.
From the shadows, an onlooker smiled, impressed and bemused.
Just as it seemed all was lost, moments before Charlotte lost out against her opponents, a new figure stepped into the ring, clapping their gloved hands, commanding the attention of all present.
The figure revealed herself as Duchess Siegfried - of the ducal house Siegfried. Sole proprietor and head of household. Her station outranked all present - even charlotte's would-be fiance.
It was then that the enigmatic woman announced her adoption of charlotte.
Charlotte was saved by the duchess that day, who revealed that her husband, the true duke of house siegfried, died honorably in battle alongside his brothers. Of all those that battled that day, she was the only surviving member of the house. Though still able to service her country as a military powerhouse, the duchess was only growing older and older and she feared, without an heir, the house would soon crumble into ruin.
When the duchess saw her that day, she knew that charlotte was a perfect fit for the cutthroat, military house of Siegfried; and could become an even more splendid heiress.
With the intent of training into a battle-tested heiress & elevating the status of the military house Siegfried to its former glory, charlotte sets out to become an adventurer!

Personality
“Oh! You’re quite forward...”

Alignment: True Neutral

Traits
Virtues ( + ): Polite, Eloquent, Tactful, Generous, Loyal
Characteristics ( / ): Demure, Perfectionistic, Neat-Freak, Affection-starved
Vices ( - ): Two-faced, Neurotic, Petty, Vain, Haughty

Personality:
As a result of the way she was raised - forever in the pursuit of perfection - Charlotte does not typically speak her mind and hides behind the graceful ideology of the 'perfect lady'. Always demure, graceful, merciful and patient. Beneath the surface, however, she's incredibly petty and vain. At times, her mask inevitably slips, and others can see her true temperament for themselves. Ever since her debutante ball from hell, Charlotte's iron-clad control over her emotions has weakened along with her mental state. Consequently, she is far more prone to fits of barbaric rage.

As a rule, Charlotte despises disorderliness and obsesses over image; an obsession that, at times, drives her to unnecessary or even reckless acts of heroism in the hopes of gaining renown and gratitude for her noble house, but most of all - affection for herself. Her deepest desire is to be loved - but all her life she's gone about it in a way that has twisted her personality into what it is now.

It is the duchess's hope that, one day, through her life and experiences and adventures with others outside of the noble sphere, Charlotte might find true love and happiness for herself - growing into an heir that will redeem the Siegfried dukedom to its former glory.

Motivations:
To gain prestige to restore the status of her house
To gain experience and become a “worthy” heir
To desperately seek out love, attention and affection wherever she may find it

Trivia:
- Lottie’s weapon is lovingly nicknamed “Darling”.
- As a perfectionist, Charlotte absolutely despises the scar on her face - not only is the mark a constant reminder of how unloved she is, but it is also an ugly asymmetry on what one might consider a lady’s most important asset.
